Coin Mech (two of them) mod US->CDN query
« on: March 08, 2010, 09:48:34 pm »
Hi guys,

Hoping someone can help me with these Coin mechs...the metallic one is a Coin Controls (Royton Oldham England) USA .25 mech and the other a plastic CA US .25 mech.  Any idea where the magnets would be (to remove) to make these take Canadian quarters?

Try opening up the plastic mech ("to open squeeze") -- I just opened up one of my Canadian CA mechs and can't tell if there would be space for a magnet in there (mine has a spring), but I would expect it to be right around the area labeled "to open squeeze".

EDIT: Turns out I do have a US CA mech in my box o' mechs -- the magnet is the round cylinder at the bottom when you open the first "door".

You are right...little magnetic cylinder which is pretty easy to remove.

Now to figure out the metalic ones!

Thanks!

the coin controls metal, is inside the square part.

the plastic one, i'm not sure... i always go with the imonex style and throw these ones out.

The metal one looks like a Coin Mechanisms mech that I have in the box o' mechs and the magnet in that one is definitely  behind the tilted rectangle near the centre. It is a pretty strong magnet in mine, so if you pull that arm out and put a Canadian quarter on it, it should stick right away. Getting it open on my mech looks to be a challenge, which is probably why it ended up in the box (and it came there from somebody else's box of unused mechs).

EDIT: I see lilshawn already got this one and should be ashamed of pitching such lovely mechs away and then paying $30 for a replacement!  ;)

The plastic magnet was held in a little clip and easy to remove so for sure I have the 2 mechs I will need.

On the Metalic ones, the magnet is in the square but seems impossible to remove...almost like they sealed the magnet in?

you could always use a propane (and propane accessories) torch to heat up the block... it will destroy the magnetic field within it... it's possible that they just magnetized the block there too. there may be no "magnet" in it.

all the ones like that i've seen have a "door" of such you can pry out or remove in some way.

if there is no other mech, i'd say torch it. (just don't go all funny and heat it up till it warps) prop open the "door" with the block on it with a bit of metal and heat it up until metal doesn't stick anymore.
