thinking of moving from xp32 to xp64 - issues?
« on: January 29, 2010, 05:32:37 pm »
hi guys,

i was thinking of moving from xp32 to xp64 but was wondering what issues i may run into.  for example, would all my software/hardware still work in my cab?

for software (running mamewah as my FE), i'm running just about all consoles emu's on my beast.  instead of listing each individually, i'll just ask, will win32 apps run ok on win64?

for hardware, here's a rundown of what i have in my cab:

ati radeon hd 8400
ultimarc mini-pac opti
led-wiz board (from groovy game gear)
spinners (groovy game gear)
act-labs lightgun (i have read there are NO 64 bit drivers, is this true? i would hate to lose lightguns)

i would love the bit of speed bump by moving to xp64 but would hate to lose any functionality.

any help is appreciated!

Your always going to risk having problems with old hardware. I think you will need to hear from people who have this equipment and can verify it working.

I think I'd skip xp64 at this time and just jump to Windows 7 64.  It seems to have better compatibility, even with older hardware, than xp64.  Not to mention the backwards compatibility works quite well.  I personally love Windows 7 as it's been rock solid for me and I run it in all of our computers here at home now.

Unfortunately I don't have experience with the act-labs guns, but I know the AimTrak gun modules that I use work flawlessly on Win 7 X64.  If I recall the really didn't make 64 bit drivers for the Act-Labs.  Not 100% sure though...

I know it would be painful to loose the Act-Labs guns because of the price you probably paid for them.  However, I would HIGHLY recommend the AimTrak from Ultimarc...  I think it's by far the best, easiest to calibrate, and use light gun solution for us home MAME cab/PC users.

yeah, i was thinking of going that route if i go with win7.  i could always cannibalize the act-lab guns and add the aim-trak to them.

you being someone who has added the aimtrak to a gun, was it relatively simple to do?

thanks

It isn't very difficult at all if you have basic soldering skills.  I've never seen the Act Labs guns in person, so I don't know how much space is inside of them to install the AimTrak.  Perhaps someone in the AimTrak thread has experience with them.  I use Guncon2's that I cannibalized and wired up almost all the buttons to them.  They work like a charm.
