CPS3 in DOS!
« on: March 21, 2009, 05:46:04 pm »
Haven't heard much buzz about this, but there is a dos advmame binary that runs CPS3 games!!! I was contemplating installing linux on my dos cab because I needed an os that could run newer versions of mame (in order to get CPS3 support of course), but now I don't have to!

I got the binary (you need to overwrite your old advmame.exe) from:
saint's note - please respect the MAMEdev policies regarding derivatives on this website - thanks! http://arcadecontrols.com/BYOAC-and-MAME.shtml

Not sure if I am just out of the loop, but I'm surprised I didn't hear about this the day it came out. Anyone else surprised to hear this, or is there just too few of us still running dos cabs?

/bill

Thats awesome. I wonder what the speed would be like on a fast dual core in Dos? I'd love to see some benchmarks. :)

I think you would get some nice speed, although DOS doesn't support multiple CPU's. Still, CP3 games run pretty damn good on my P4 1.8.

finally added this version 2010 to my cab. I played around with it and its great.

It's not mentioned anywhere that I but PONG & Neopong are addedand too.

The CPS3 games, so far i got JOJO, sfiii, warzard running. I have to get the sfiii3 running. I think i'm missing some roms.

they refuse to provide source for their builds, making this an illegal build.  (which is also why you haven't seen such changes integrated into other builds)

I'm using both (regular build .106 & Advmame+2010) in my cab. I may try to convert and use just the + version to see if all the games I have already put in the cab works and hopefully no chnages (like in Monitor freq). I have spent alot of time making all the video modes for different freq. I just don't feel like going thru them if the + version had changed them. I see something along the CPs1, CPS2, NeoGeo.

Anyway I am sticking to this rule, "why fix it when it's not broken". :)

Any game thats added to the + thats really worth adding to the cab (like cps3) ? Or that list we see in the www is all that was added/changed ?

btw I'm not trying to be difficult by asking for the links for these builds to be taken down.

Look at it in simple terms, while this build might be 'cool' for cab owners it's also stiflingly development of other modernized versions of AdvanceMAME.  Not providing the source not only violates the license, but makes it impossible for anybody who wants to backport other drivers to leverage their work, and thus, in the long run is not a good thing for anybody.

If somebody wanted to start a project, following the license, to backport various drivers to 0.106 / AdvMAME then nobody would complain (although it wouldn't be the development teams priority to help, or accept bugs in such cases)

All I'm saying is that if you want to see this sort of thing done you should get behind people who want to do it properly, and builds like this aren't going to help such things get off the ground.  I doubt I have to explain the virtues of development models where the source is available and should always be redistributed in any more detail.
