Control Panel Question.
« on: January 11, 2010, 12:29:21 pm »
I'm planning on making a dedicated 2 player 4 way only CP top for my cab. The only thing is, how many buttons should i put per player? I'm thinking a row of 3, mainly because it doesn't seem like 2 and 4 way games really ever used that many buttons.

Any insight will be helpflul! Thanks.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

When I've considered making a 4-way panel, I was thinking three buttons would cover it.

However, I was only going to put a single 4-way in the middle, then put three buttons each on both sides, for right and left handed players. Most 4-way games only used a single stick for two players anyway (players took turns).

In that case, I could do a pair of dual 8-way joysticks for Smash TV/ Robotron, etc and a single 4 way and 3 buttons in the middle for 4 way games.

I'm actually in the planning stages of swappable panels myself,  and asked a similiar question of myself on the topic of 4-way panels.

Looking through MAWS,  there is a number of 4-way games that used 4 buttons,  not a huge number,  but a few.  So I'm going with 4 per player.

My plan is though,  in the center I'm going to place a diagonally rotated 4-way with a single button,  to give me a Q-bert/Congo-Bongo joystick without configuration hassals.

There are also a few dual 4-way games,  but I've decided there are so few that I'll use that 8-way that switches to 4-way from the top on my 8-way panel and handle them.

Hope this is of interest/relevance!

Thanks for the info Gatt! When I get a chance I'll have to do some maws digging myself too.
