3D network announced
« on: January 05, 2010, 09:41:00 am »

ESPN announces a 3D network

Interesting... I notice no details on how they plan to pull that off on existing TV sets.  I bet it ends up a pay channel.

"However, we're telling people they'll need to buy a new player," says Andy Parsons, a senior VP at Pioneer USA and spokesman for the Blu-ray Disc Association. According to the association, the good news is that Sony's PlayStation 3 can be upgraded via software to work with the new 3D discs.

So... if there is enough additional space in firmware storage, existing players should be upgradeable too... if they bother.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing all of the people who spent $3000 on a 65" plasma complain that "they got ripped off" because new 3D sets came out.   ;D

Can you imagine having to keep a bowl of $50 3D shutter glasses around for guests?  Yeahhhhhhhhhh...

The only time my TV is on is when someone is actively watching it or playing a console game.  It's almost never on with people puttering around in the background.  We don't watch much regular programming, though.  It's all movies, football, or gaming.

I have no desire for a 3D television set. I think that is completely retarded. I am more than happy to plunk down $20 once or twice a year for the '3D' experience at a theater though.

And on that note, where do they plan on getting the bandwidth to run 1080P broadcast at a super high bitrate to do this 3D thing?

The second article says DirecTV has launched a new satellite with rumors that this is one of the reasons.  Certainly that gives them the bandwidth.  It also says cable providers will have a real problem with the bandwidth requirements.

By raising broadband prices until people stop downloading.

Uh, look around, jim, it works better than handing out twinkies to potheads.  People are constantly shelling out money for the newest device, the smallest streamer, the clearest TV, the most advanced console.  Ever since the 8 track the lifespan of any tech has been about 5 years before the next one is out.

Um, ... I agree with Chad.   :o

Takes a while until it reaches a critical mass though. Like for the last two years, the prices of decent sized flat screens finally came under $1000, so that was the tipping point. But LCDs and plasmas have been around how long?

Heck, I even know people who have bought HDTV flat screens and then never upgraded their cable service to actually get HD channels. So we're not done with the upgrading even for HD yet... but give it 10-15 years and 3D will be where HD is today.
NO MORE!!

I have HD capable TVs but no HD signals.  The closest I come to HD is upscaled from XBMC.  My wife won't give up the multi room viewing that the old DirecTivos "provide".  I get the feeling that until DirecTV puts out a true Tivo unit with real MRV we'll be staying SD.

Hmm, I dunno, a Holographic projector sitting in the middle of the room sure would be cool.

Or one of those "wall tvs" like has been seen in many movies. That in particular is no far off. And THAT in 3d could be.... interesting.

But I'd tend to agree that I'd almost never browse over to the 3d channel and have to put on glasses unless I was watching a movie, so it'd likely be just on demand or PPV, not subscribe to a full time channel.

But if it was a holographic projector with no glasses required? THAT I might subscribe to  :)

Check into ATT U-verse if it's available in your area.  I just switched to it from Directivos a few weeks ago.  The multiroom is wireless and works a little more seamlessly than the tivos.

I dont see this being nothing more than a niche market as the average football fan couldnt give a rats ass that the game could be in 3D. All they want to see is the picture BIG and CLEAR! If they wanted to see it in 3D, they would have bought a ticket to the game to be there in person. Certain movies would be great 3D but the ones that are 3D now only have a niche market as they are only shown in select theaters or IMAX and rarely released in 3D on DVD or blue-ray.

I remember the HD-DVD vs Blue-Ray war and everyone thought Sony would loose because of the Betamax debacle in the 80's but Blue-Ray won and all the HD-DVD owners are boo-hoo'ing it now.

The average consumer has spoken and said they will only pay $25.00 to $50.00 per month for internet, so any increase in price and the subcriptions will decline. Consumers also have spoken and said they will only pay $30.00 to $60.00 a month for cable/sattelite tv. In my area, Time Warner offers cable, high speed internet and home phone service for $79.00 a month for 2 years. They've won over most of the regular phone companies subscribers that the phone company has almost dropped land lines and are 75% cell phones now!

3D tv channel will go the wayside like ON-TV, Betamax and dial-up AOL!

Just my prediction!

Looks like a cool deal.  Not available here.  I also can't get DSL even though people 1000 yards down the street can.  No FIOS either.  I'm stuck with subleased cable that costs too much for my needs.

That and I really, really like Sunday Ticket.   ;D

I completely disagree with Fordman.  I don't care much about HD but would love football in 3D.  Depending on the hardware prices it's still a better deal than $400/game in person.  Keep in mind I say that as someone who lives a 3 minute backroad drive from a major market NFL stadium.

I said the 'average' football fan! Most football fans NFL or College are average and watch at home. The die-hard fans buy the tickets to the games. The average fan goes to maybe 1 or 2 games per season. The average fan wont shell out the money for 3D equipment plus any accessories needed to view it. The average fan watches on TV at home or in a bar because they cant afford tickets, dont want to be cold (most NFL & College markets), spent their extra cash on the jersey they are wearing, dont want to pay $7.50 for a 12oz beer, doesnt want to listen to wife complain she's cold the whole game, and so on and so on.....

3D will only be a niche market! Unless your just being coy by diagreeing to be 'disagreeing'?  ;)

The average fan acts differently depending on location.  You're in Detroit, right?   Not exactly the same motivation for a fanbase as most other NFL cities.

People here throw parties for games.  They go all out.  Tickets are scarce even for the hardcore fans if they aren't season ticket holders.  The season ticket waiting list is a decade long.  People here actually might group up and shell out a bunch of cash to watch games in 3D.  I guarantee if the hardware came down anywhere near the cost of a 60" plasma there would be a lot of "average fans" here who would buy them to watch the Patriots.  I know people who tailgate in the Gillette parking lots even without tickets - that's sitting in stadium traffic and paying $40 to park just to be part of the party.

Well, Paycheck was a Philip K Dick movie so I guess Total Recall isn't TOO out there.

Except for the "crappy movie" comment, but Canadians have poor taste anyway.

When people say total recall I can hear arnie screaming "BENNY!" in my head. its awesome. Also, incase anyone missed it, there was no virtual girlfriend in total recall.

The concept of virtual reality, or virtual "girlfriends" goes way back further than any of the movies cited here. Think of the classic sci-fi writers of the 1950's, 60's and even earlier. They all touched on the concept, including the idea of virtual sex.

if I remember correctly, total recall does not have virtual gf...
there's one movie... Virtuosity (1995) with Denzel Washington...
I'm pretty sure there is a virtual gf...

as for 3d tv...
I'm still using tube right now, no LCD yet.
(but have a front projector on a big screen for movies and sports events)
and I'm no big sports fans...

I only watch some world series, superbowl, and some world cup socceer.

However, from what I see now, Mitsubishi has the 3d tv set for like $5k...
in maybe 2 yrs, that can go down to $3k or so....

I think I will buy....
and assuming the glasses are like $10 each...
I'll probably buy like 20+.....

or maybe at that time, we all will have our own 3d glasses...

(just like I only have 2 Wii remote, but every time there is party, ppl will bring extra).

I've probably seen that damn movie at least 50 times.

Thumbelina!

Commentary on the DVD ticked me off a little.. director says everything was a dream.  I thought the whole mindfuck was supposed to be it really happened, but more or less exactly as the fake memory was planned, so he'd never know for sure.

Which would, you know, make it fall in line with PKD stories.  That director has retrofitted new explanations to his old movies before, though.

Considering the loose adaptation to the PKD short story, who the eff knows what's reality and whats not.   :dizzy:

For those of you (like me) who have a pair of red/cyan glasses, this is a cool pic. Not much to contribute to this thread, but damn cool.
