Screen Tearing (Different Topic)
« on: January 02, 2010, 01:41:25 pm »
I'd delete my other two posts but I can't figure out how.

I've made the realization I'm an idiot.  I wasn't testing the correct games and now have realized I have screen tearing even with my computer monitor.  (for those who haven't read my other posts we thought it was because I was outputting by s-video to a TV)  Even with the syncrefresh and triplebuff on I experience terrible tearing.  I understand this has to do with the refresh rates...but what else can be done about it?  I'm now testing directly from the computer to my computer monitor so everything should be fine - but it's not.  For those who aren't familiar with "tearing" please see:

Surely there must be something that can be done?  I'd like to stop feeling like this  :soapbox:

you have a few options,
you can get an arcadevga card and use a monitor at 15khz or tv(make a vga to scart if possible 4 that),
I had a pretty smooth picture with arcadevga and arcade monitor - also quite easy to setup,
or you can use soft15khz tool and set up using powerstrip,
or use advancemame.

the most difficult thing is to set up your mame to use the right resolutions(closest to the original).

I use dos and advancemame but there is no magic bullet to fix these problems,
its always a compromise,i still mess about with settings for certain games to run better if needed.

I hardly get tearing but i tend to alter my settings on a game by game basis,im sure it must be possible to do it with a windows based system too.

Even with an ArcadeVGA or Soft15khz you will get tearing unless the refresh rate is exact down to the billionth of a Hertz.  You could try CabMAME which attempts to modify the emulation and sound speed to match the refresh rate, but I haven't had much luck with that (sound stutters, or changes in pitch).  I don't know of a perfect solution currently.
