Hello from Maine,

An acquaintance of mine has the Wii with the black glue on the chip, full details here :

http://www.wiidrives.com/identify?serial=LU64126327

It's the "GC2-D2E" covered in black glue.

She wants me to mod it for her. Have any of you modded this one?

I haven't modded a Wii since 2007 back when it was only 6 wires

Thanks :)

Thanks for chiming in :)

I don't know a thing about soft-modding a Wii. What method do you successfully use?

And with that would they have to avoid updates? If so is it a big problem if they accidentally install an update? Would it result in a  bricked Wii?

I'd like to set it up so it's idiot-proof as I won't be there and they aren't techno-savvy.

I'm under the impression that a hard-modded Wii is unlikely to get bricked ...

You can't ever guarantee a modded device won't get bricked by an update, hard or soft modded.  It's a risk we all take.

If you look in the Wii USB hard drive thread here there is a lot of good info on soft mods and things we ran into doing it.  That's probably your best end goal - a 250-320gb hard drive to load from.  The loaders are being coded to work around stuff like required updates and security tweaks.

I like the idea of using a USB hard drive rather than DVD-R's ... Maybe I should just send over our hard-modded Wii and set theirs up to use USB for my daughter and I :)

Is it easy to do or a terrible pain in the butt?

The soft mod takes about 20-30 minutes and that includes reading/prep time.  It's easier than modding an Xbox.

Took me about 5 days (an hour or two a day) to get the softmods all in and working.  Note that I have a good amount of experience modding Tivos, consoles, etc.

Took me a few hours of running back and forth, reading a guide, copying files, etc
It can be done quickly once you know what you're doing, but the first time takes a little while.

Priiloader will block a disk from updating, and it also blocks online updates. Just have to use the settings in the hacks.ini file.

I asked...

Softmodding is so easy it makes you wonder why everyone doesn't do it after they learn about it.  With it, I don't quite understand what the necessity of a modchip is for a Wii.

It probably dates back to the days of "Playstation"

I think it was about 13 years ago.

"Modchips" came out of Hong Kong, they were so amazing, it changed everything! Now every game rented could be copied :)

It was like 6 wires to solder, the chip looked like a spider. It was so cool :)

It was CD-R disks burned at 2X on a Pentium 2 computer if I recall.

Since then we've come to trust a hardware modification.

We just don't have the same level of faith in software mods - they seem less effective.

It seems like a software mod could be killed by a software update, but a hardware mod seems more resilient and cooler.

We'll see - by the time the Wii is "old" we'll look back and see if there was any point to hardware mods or not :)

Hardware modding seems so straight forward too - you open the console up and add a piece - that's it.

With software mods it seems so much more complicated...

Ultimately though I just love modchips :) They are so cool

I have a DriveKey on my WII and it works great. Love it.

However - a word of caution -  I installed one on my in-laws WII and theirs didn't work. Very frustrating. Seems like there may be some WII consoles that the DriveKey doesn't like...

I suppose you want to make sure you get a 2.0 version of the DriveKey - maybe they have rectified the problem, as I the one I put in my in-laws console was a 1.1 version I believe.

get a wiikey2? those are easy to install(assuming you can solder in tiny points). no cutting ic chips or any other monkey business involved. just plain old soldering. get the yellow sticker though. I forgot but I think its only like 6 or 7 wires. I remember doing a few. took me less than half hour.

also whats this "brick protection" I hear about for wii softmods??

On the topic of hardware mods versus software mods -

I'd like to get an unbiased opinion from someone who has done many software and hardware mods - I suspect the biggest softmod advocates don't actually own soldering irons and the biggest hardmod advocates (like myself) think that software if voodoo.

Apparently they are both pay services, my friend Ryan was telling me that a kid was trying to charge him $25 for information to perform a softmod on his Wii (Ryan would actually have to do it, the kid was just going to send him a zip file or something)

$25 ? That's the price of a WiiKey !

Ive done both, I used to put modchips in PSX and XBOX. Most PSX chips used 6 to 8 wires, and when I first did XBOXs they used 56? solder points (half on chip, half on board)

then I used to do TSop flashes on xbox, then moved up to softmods when the 1.6s came out. Now I still do CFW flashes on PSP, DVD firmware flashes on 360,and I do softmods on Wii. I still own a soldering iron.

I've installed modchips in several Playstations in the past, but have my XBOX, Playstation2, and Wii softmodded. The PS2 softmod has worked fine for many years, the XBOX I've had softmodded for a year without issue, and the Wii is "so far, so good".

This is an arcade forum. You've gotta have a soldering iron and know how to use it in this hobby.

Theres a distinct difference between being able to recap a monitor and soldering chip legs that are so small you need to isolate them with razor blades to keep from hitting adjacent legs.

I can chip an xbox in my sleep.  My PS/2?  Damn near killed me.

I'm a hardware guy.  I settled on the softmod for the Wii because it was so darn easy.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

OK, I just installed a DriveKey, it was super easy.

Here is a pic :

After that I covered it in electrical tape and reassembled the Wii, it works fine and it's a done deal :)

----------------------------

Just to explain to anyone who has not modded a Wii :

The driveKey is relatively expensive but very easy to install, all you need is the tri-wing and phillips-head screwdrivers that can be ordered with the chip, and electrical tape. There is absolutely no soldering involved.

It is super easy as long as you have a well lit work area, peace and quiet, and take your time.

Follow this guide to dismantle the Wii :

http://wiki.nintendo-scene.com/Wii_disassembly

And whatever guide corresponds to your DriveKey, I had the DriveKey2 and used this guide :

https://modchip-depot.com/faq.php?CDpath=0&cID=2#4

As you can see the DriveKey is simply plugged in-line from the mainboard to the DVD drive, and that's all there is to it!

------------------------

Also my other pal wanted a mod on the cheap, actually for free, I had an extra WiiKey1 I had forgotten about, so here's some small scale soldering :

I used my new-fangled soldering iron :

http://www.curiousinventor.com/store/product/254

It's pretty cool :)

I used 30 gauge wire, stripped and tinned, and a little flux on all mating surfaces prior to soldering them. I had forgotten how small those solder points on the WiiKey are! They are small like the letters on a penny.

Have fun!

Yeah I was just fooling around, being "spelling police" is never productive :)

Anyway, soldering is fun :) But I can't play NSMB on my WiiKey1 straight, apparently I have to use the USB-loader, so I'll have to study that.

I also have a swap-disk on my PS2 and didn't even realize they made a soft-mod for that, I might look into that but I bet I'll find it voodoo-like and end up ordering a solder-free PS2 mod-chip. The swap disk is cool but I find it irritating.

Cheers

I installed my Wiikey when they first came out, but got into the softmod thing a little while ago as well. They both have their uses, the wiikey is definately best in my opinion for copying a game onto a disc and playing it, while softmod is great for playing games on usb/homebrew. I don't use homebrew often, usb loader is good, but I still prefer to have everything on disc just in case.

That said, my PS2 is softmod as I couldn't get hold of any hardware mods at the time and I wouldn't really want to now - the hdloader is fantastic.

Essentially then, it's all down to personal preferences :dunno
