Side art in Ukiyo-e style... Busy? (Marquee Added)
« on: November 28, 2009, 07:22:48 pm »
I was hoping to get some opinions on the artwork I'm doing for my fighting game themed cabinet... This is just the one side and it's not quite finished -- but I'm worried it's just too busy.

The whole cab will be done in the style of Ukiyo-e prints (Examples: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=ukiyo-e&gbv=2&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g3)

What do you guys think?

Assuming the rest of the room could handle something like this, I wouldn't say it's too busy. I really like the traditional Japanese style at the top with the manga at the bottom. Very nice!

After much deliberation, I think I'm gonna go with something like this (looks kinda blurry on here, but super sharp at the original 1.5 gb file size)... thoughts?

Now all I have left to do is the marquee, kick panel, control panel, and the entire other side. :-[

Are you going to texture the whole cab in that "parchment" type look (that's around the border)?

Just curious, more than anything. It really looks good with that artwork. I'm trying to envision a tmold that would go well with that. A black, yes, Probably that textured black would be best.

Anyway, very nice  :applaud:

Agreed, I would go with the leather textured black t-molding.I think that would look great on there.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I'm glad people seem to like this style better. I was leaning that way, but it's nice to hear others agree.

@drventure
@Ryglore

You guys are right, textured black would work I think. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks, that's what I'll do!

@Malenko

It takes me soooo long to do this stuff, I could never make money at it. Believe me!

But I do plan on putting all my assets up on Localarcade (if it ever comes back) or wherever so others can use them if they want. Alot of what's on there is actually vector stuff that I do in illustrator then pull into photoshop to assemble. The other side is going to be similar but with RYU from Street Fighter and the ukiyo-e version of his main background (Suzaku Castle.)

Some tables have a faux-wood styled edge trimming. Perhaps you could do/find something like that in a bamboo style finish, to help set off the Orient feel?

You +could+ forgo tmolding and go with a pressure sensitive or heat sensitive veneer edge trim (you can get that stuff at home depot).

If it's put on properly, it looks really good. Might not be a tough as tmold though, so that might be an issue.

I've been looking into some kind of wood-like t-mold/edge trimming. If I can find something that looks good, I think that would work well... Thanks yet again...

On my way to do the left side art I stopped off to work on the marquee. I think I'm still fighting the "busy" factor. I guess I could leave off the "toukon" and just go with the image. (Toukon is what I'm calling the cab... It means "fighting spirit" and is also represented by the black kanji characters at the left of the marquee.)

Maybe busy is good... :-\

No Bluepoint. That is awesome, nice work indeed! IMO, On the marquee you need the name of the cab, so I wouldn't take it off and the layout works really well. I wouldn't change a thing. =)

Really impressive artwork!

Are you going to compliment the red side art with the blue of the well known tidal wave image in the same style, with pehaps a KOF character? I'm assuming the red side is from last blade.

Thanks again for all the positive feedback. Sounds like I can move on to the other side now!

@Ryglore
I think you're right about the name having to be on the Marquee. Takes away some of the charm not to name your game... Plus I spent all that time on the font and logo, it has to go on the cabinet somewhere!

@binarydump

I was actually trying to avoid referencing Hokusai's "The Great Wave" since it really seems to be the one piece of woodblock art that everyone is already familiar with.

The red side is actually Samurai Shodown. That's Haohmaru, with a Ukiyo-e style version of the stage in the game I most closely associate with him:

The other side will be Ryu and his stage (Suzaku Castle.)
