Finishes without Artwork
« on: November 17, 2009, 04:18:08 pm »
My cab is a from-scratch cocktail.  I'm going with a blue and black color scheme.  Since it's not based around any particular game, I'm not planning in sinking any effort into high quality artwork or printing (the control panels are black plastic).  Still, I'd like spruce it up a bit while avoiding paper cutouts of Nintendo characters.

Anyway the real reason for this thread is that I'm looking for some inspiration.  Anyone have links to projects which incorporate very little printed art and still look decent?  Hope my question makes sense.

Ryglore's shmup arcade looks pretty good though I'm not sure how that would come out on a cocktail

depending on where it's going (and what style you want), you could pick up some maple or walnut contact veneer (try Rocklers.com) and a few pieces of molding and turn it into a fairly nice piece of furniture.

I found a 10$ beat to hell toybox made out of old cedar planks. Sanded the heck out of it, pulled out the nails, filled the holes and tacked on a bunch of trim pieces I had left over from a kitchen remodel, then stained and poly'd the whole thing. Its now in our living room to hold my 5yo's toys and it doesn't look out of place at all.

Hey, that's a nice looking cabinet!

Yeah, I had forgotten about the lineup of "furniture style" cabinets (Knievel's Woody being a prime example).  When done well, those are really amazing pieces of work.
