T-Molding Size??
« on: November 05, 2009, 03:56:18 pm »
I am using the Ultimate Arcade II instructions for building my new cab. The one thing that I'm not sure of is the size of t-molding vs the size of MDF.
The MDF they suggest is 5/8" and the molding is 3/4". I always thought the t-molding needs to be the same width as the wood? 3/4" wood and 3/4" t-molding.
Thanks!

Generally you do want to use the same size t-moulding as the material thickness for the sides etc.

They may be refering to the CP and may be suggesting using 5/8" MDF + 1/8" acrylic/polycarb to give 3/4" to match the t-moulding.

Yes, that would make sense. The instructions call for acrylic on the sides.
Thanks for pointing out the obvious for me. lol :)

Here is an example of 5/8" MDF with 3/4" T-Molding with 1/16" laminate on both sides:

Using 5/8" T Molding with 5/8" or 3/4" T with 3/4" MDF would leave you with overhang of the laminate.  If you are just painting then no problem, go with a t molding that matches.

Good thinking Epyx, I had not thought about 1/16" laminate on both sides to add up to an 1/8"  :)

Any thoughts on using 3/4" t-molding with 23/32" plywood?  ???

The size is soooo close but does it look good or is it a pain (looks bad or catches on clothes and stuff)?

That won't be an issue...you can always trim some of the T-Molding using the sharp chisel technique, but the amount in your example would be pretty minuscule.
