Guitar Hero or Rock Band?
« on: September 21, 2009, 02:10:02 am »
I'm thinking about getting Guitar Hero or Rock Band for my 360. Which is the best one to get? I may eventually get both but I'm not sure which one to get first. I'll most likely only be playing Guitar on my own so I'm not too fussed about drums/mic etc.

There seems to be a few different guitars for both games. Are some better than others? Can the Guitars be used on both games?

Franco - it's not even close.  Rock Band is miles and miles better than Guitar Hero.  The music store is packed with great songs plus you an import songs from the first Rock Band into Rock Band 2 for $5.  I have over 250 songs to choose from and the game never gets boring.  Also, the tracking is much better where the notes on screen actually line up to the notes in the songs.  You just feel like you are "playing" more in Rock Band.

I prefer Guitar Hero, but that's because I'm a metalhead and Rock Band just doesn't "get it". I do agree with James, though, that Rock Band plays better....but only slightly.

RB2 over GHWT
GHWT over RB.

I think you could buy the GHWT package and the RB2 game only, for less than the RB2 package.
This way you have the best of both.

I haven't tried the latest GHs or RB:Beatles, but that's because I've grown tired of these games.

Another thing to think about is the downloads for the next version of GHWT won't be compatible with the current GHWT.  This is why I gave up on the American Idol series, when I was still interested in this type of game play.

I agree with that.

I had a RB1 guitar and I didn't like it. Now I have a wireless guitar that I got with GHWT. My drum set and mic are from RB1.

I should have added that in my first post - I used the GH3 guitar to play Rock Band.  THe Rock Band guitar sucks, IMO but from what I understand it's all a matter of what you get used to.  I've been playing GH since the first one on PS2 but switched to Rock Band after GH3 (Rock Band is made by the guys who made the first GH games).

Or get the best of both worlds.  I purchased GHWT for our family and a 2nd ROckband drumset...that way I have cross compatibility with both. The guitars/mic are interchangeable but the drumset isn't (or at least my research led me to believe).  Then I just purchased the Rockband CD. I should try the GHWT drums with Rockband but don't think they will work.

I use the PS3 RB1 drumset on PS2 for GH and RB. Works great. I don't know about the cross-compatibility of the other consoles, though.

Console makers have helped to ensure instrument compatibility between current and upcoming guitar and band games. Both Sony[33] and Microsoft[34] have announced that instruments for World Tour, Rock Band 2, and Konami's Rock Revolution will work between all three games on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

I haven't played my RB1 drums on GHWT yet, but that would be easy to do to confirm this statement from the wiki article.

Johnny Cougar Mellencamp?  You've got to be kidding me.

Bob Dylan's version of All Along the Watchtower?

 :dizzy:

Don't be dissing Mellencamp!

And what's wrong with Dylan's version of AATW?  He did write the song.  The Jimi Hendrix Experience version is played to death anyway.
 :P

FWIW - I started a similar thread a while back and after a lot of back and forth, I decided to get RBII.  As others have said, it just seemed to play a lot better that GHWT.

i have a 360, and the following music games:

rock band
rock band 2
Guitar Hero 3
Guitar Hero World Tour
Guitar Hero Metallica

Rock Band 2 is the only one that gets played...the gameplay is fantastic, the set list is pretty good, and the ammount of songs available is insane.  The selection of downloadable content for guitar hero is laughable at best.  I do have to agree that the guitar hero guitars are much, much better than the rock band guitars.  i havent used the guitar hero drums, i have the original rock band drums, and they work just fine.  the rock band 2 drums are nicer because they are wireless and quieter than the original ones.  as for compatibility, cross compatibility is pretty much all there on the 360.  as far as i know, all of the instruments work in the rockband games, and i think they all work in the newer guitar hero games.(world tour and newer).  the rock band guitar doesnt work with guitar hero 3.

with rock band, there are new downloadable songs every week...there are over 300 available to download right now, not including the tracks included on the disks.  like javeryh said, you can import all of the original rockband tracks for $5, which adds alot of songs also.

i am a metal head, so i do like guitar hero because they have a generally heavier track list.  however, i dont too often play any of these games by myself..they are usually when we have people over..the track list in rockband has a much more broad range of music, which is good because not everyone loves metal.  plus, there are some good heavy songs in rock band available...Lamb of God FTW!!!

now i do have to say the Guitar Hero Metallica has the highest percentage of awesome tracks of any of them, but it is a relatively small set compared to rock band, so it isnt really fair.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll see if I can pick up a GH guitar and a copy of Rock Band 2 for starters. I'll probably get all of the GH/RB titles eventually.

As far as the GH guitars go, there seems to be two or three controllers. Is one better to go for than the others?

I would stay away from the white wired ones, they were terrible IMO.
I don't particularly like the ones with the touchpad on the neck either, but they're better.
I would personally go with one of these:

+1   i have the white wired explorer, the black wireless les paul, and the world tour guitar with the touchpad, as well as the wired rock band stratocaster.  the black wireless les paul is by far my favorite.

if so, that's what i got right when ghII came out, and i love it.
honestly, i think it's the best out of any guitar i've tried.
btw, nice art, is that a sticker type thing or what?

Thanks. Yeah, it's a PS2 guitar and it's just a sticker I printed out and applied. Also added the Ibanez logo on the headstock, fret markers, and a battery cover (which you obviously can't see).

I like this guitar better than any of the others I've tried.

Just an FYI if you purchase Guitar Hero 5 before the end of September, you will receive Guitar Hero:  Van Halen for free when it ships (so I've been told).  That being said, I play Rock Band II more than any other music game that I have.  I do; however, prefer the Les Paul controller from GH3.

Thanks for the advice again guys.

Is the guitar with [GH World Tour] ok? I'm thinking about getting the whole kit as the GF said she would split it with me.

From what I have been reading it looks like the drums should work with RB too.

The GH:WT guitar is fine (it has the touch sensitive slider bar), but as far as the drums, RB are better.

How are they better?

I have the RB drums and they work for GHWT.  The RB set has 4 drum pads and the GHWT drums have three drum pads and two cymbals.

The GHWT drums looks better, but I haven't played with them so I don't know if it's as good as it looks.

Also, you can get a cymbal pack for the Rock Band 2+ drums that makes them darn near like having a real kit.

I also have the GH:WT wireless guitar and I like it. My favorite guitar is my original PS/2 red guitar. If there was a decent and cheap adaptor for PS/2 to 360 I would get one.

I passed Psychobilly on GH:Modern Hits tonight, it's much harder there than in PS/2. I came darn close to passing Play With Me.

Good to know, I would have bought the GH:WT drum kit when the pirces started to drop.
