At www.giveawayoftheday.com they give away DVD ripping tools now and again.
It's a new program every day. You have 24H's to download and install.
You can sign up for a newsletter so you don't have to remember to go there everyday to have a look at what's free that day...

Software does not look too bad, but it crashed a few minutes through for me converting a DVD I had on my hard drive converting to iPhone MP4. Hard crash, no errors, just got windows debug dialog.

EDIT: Second try, different DVD seems to be going ok. And thanks for the post :)

I asked my computer/music/DJ dude about this and he said he used some freeware app. I don't even have any blank DVDs, but I was mildly curious.
