New Pacman - Have questions...
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:30:55 pm »
Hey guys,

Got a pacman yesterday and I have  afew questions I was hoping you guys could help me out with.

1.  I have a hum coming from the speaker.  When you first turn on the cab it has a high pitched sound which goes away and becomes a low hum.  The speaker is not the problem as I have changed it out with a brand new one.  Any ideas of the cause?  Board? PS?

2.  The cab is in good physical shape, but the artwork is pretty warn.  I was thinking of doing a full restoration on the cab.  Does anyone know where I can get stencils for the artwork?  I can't seem to find them - do they make them still?

3.  Is there a joystick rebuild kit for these?  It is original so I would rather not replace it.

Thanks in advance for any help!
Cheers.

The Speakers humming is really annoying its most likely that the wires are getting interference from other wire there bundled with, so you might wanna have the wire go down by them selves on the other side of the cab.

Thanks.  Only questions is - it is factory, so why didn't it hum when new since the wires have never been moved?

If it's factory Pac-Man using AC, the caps on the board have probably gone bad.

You've got two options:

1) recap your board.  Pretty easy, but the caps are pricey.

2) convert your board to DC and install a switching power supply.

While you're at it, replace the factory fuse block with a new one.  The old ones are notorious for presenting problems.

If I change to a switching power supply, do I have to remove the caps from the board? Or is it a simple plug and play with Bob Roberts' kit?  Thanks!

Well...if it was mine personally, yes, you remove those caps.  I'd also personally convert the board to DC and put in a switcher, but that's just me.

If it's otherwise working fine, replacing the caps should probably be fine.

If you are going to order the power adapter kit from Bob Roberts send me a PM.  I have one that I can sell cheaper than Bob's price.

Thanks guys for all of the help.  I think I am going with the cap kit and fuse block replacement.  I'll also replace the molex edge connector as well.  All together that is only about 15 bucks from Bob.  Good deal in my opinion.  I figure I'll also spring for the speed up chip :)
