I wasn't much into that back in the day, even. That kid didn't make me think he was cool. It made me think he needed a backhand to the temple.

Granted, I did hold some resentment of kids who had a good home life and lived in a nice area...

So you hate all the kids in John Hughes movies.

Even Pretty in Pink, where she's supposedly poor, but lived in a huge house.

+1 How 'bout 'Twist n Shout', where all the black people spontaneously line dance? That made me cringe.

Yeah, I didn't have much use for those either. And I remember sitting through Johnny B Goode thinking "THERE'S NO WAY THAT KID IS A COLLEGE PROSPECT QUARTERBACK!" He's tiny!

I think Easy Money was a great movie, kinda the catalyst for all the stand-up comedians that ventured into TV shows and movies!

Also The Lost Boys was kinda the start of the 'teen vampire' flicks!

Watched Weird Science last night... sorta stands up but only if you're into either Anthony Michael Hall or Kelly LeBrock. I spent half the movie thinking "goddam that kid lives in an awesome house" more than anything else.

Watched this a few weeks ago while laid up on bedrest. It held up quite well.

Don't forget Robert Downey, Jr or Michael Berryman (of The Hills Have Eyes)

I love the scene with Gary's parents.

The movie doesn't hold up very well, but I can still watch it.

Meh, Robert Downey Jr played that same 80s punk ahole in every movie for years. It got old after a while.

Great performance by Robert Downey, Jr in that one. I guess playing a guy coked out of his gourd wasn't exactly difficult, though.

Hadn't seen that. Didn't know he made a bio pic.

Shardian, I saw Last American Virgin sometime around 83 or 84 when I was about 13 or 14. I think it makes a different impression when someone is that age as opposed to watching it when you're 25-30. Could be wrong though.

Nobody has any comments about Losin' it? Jackie Earl Haley, Tom Cruise, Shelly Long etc. Hilarious movie! Not great, but still funny.

Mannequin...sucked almost as much then as today
Roadhouse...guilty pleasure, but it don't get any more 80sish

Monster Squad
The Explorers

I set both of those up on a pedastal as a kid. The first 2 acts of The Explorers was mind blowing to a kid! The third act...sucked then, but I glossed it over. I found almost the entire movie to be suckage upon rewatch, which shocked me.

Monster Squad was awesome as a kid. I loved this movie much more than Goonies. Upon rewatch, Goonies is still an excellent movie with some of the best child acting in any movie ever made. Monster Squad was a knock-off of Goonies in a way. I should have left this one as a distant memory...

Overall, I am happy to have went back and watched 80's movies from my childhood. Sure some now stink, but a surprising number have held up nicely. I was a 90's kid, but for many 90's kids we experienced the 80's movies too since VHS didn't take off until the later 80's and was around all of the 90's. Everyone had a shelf full of bootleg 80's movies.

I bought Monster Squad the moment it finally made it to DVD. I have not regretted it. I loved that movie as a kid and still love it, plus, I collect movies written by Shane Black, so it's a must.

That was directed by Fred Dekker and another of his films from the 80s is finally coming to DVD....Night of the Creeps! That one is a classic. THRILL ME!

The Legend of Billie Jean is also rumored as finally getting a DVD release. According to Yeardley Smith, they recorded a commentary for it last year, so hopefully we'll see that out soon.

Some parts do, but you're right that it didn't hold up all that well.

Big is probably dependent on nostalgia for Big. If I saw that for the first time now I'd probably think it was pretty dumb.

Alright, it's time to say it:

"Batman" doesn't hold up. It wasn't even a very good movie when it came out. The best thing about it was all the Bat-merch you could buy. It was EVERYWHERE!

We did that outdoors this summer. It only sorta held up and most likely because I wanted it to. The kids loved it. It heavily dates itself to the late 80s early 90s.

My favorite podcast, The Hollywood Saloon, tackled the subject of which films will stand the test of time in this episode from Mar '06. This is a great podcast series for fans of true cinema.

I find that as I get older, movies from the 80s seem more and more cheesy. However, for some weird reason movies from the 70s seem to be getting better.

I'm not into dramas so a lot of those movies, however great they may be, don't mean much to me. I'm all action/horror/comedy. Lots of that in the 80s.

The Warriors was in 79 and not on their list. Idiots!

Airplane was 1980 that movie is a classic for any decade or top 10 list. It'll stand forever. I think most of the classic 80s comedies stand alone:

The original, long version of Once Upon a Time in America. Once it got chopped and re-arranged, it sucked.

I never saw Splash as a kid, but my wife had fond memories of it. I saw it with fresh eyes about a ear ago - it definitely holds up.

I don't remember if I addressed it in my previous thread, but Robocop is just as awesome and entertaining as it was when I was a kid. The only difference is now I know what all that "baby powder" stuff is.

Another one that holds up is Beverly Hills cop.
