Lately, the tv station i normally stare at while eating dinner has been showing cricket. This is really sad because this station brought gems like Southpark and Drawn Together to Australia. So i've had to stare at other stations instead. I've been watching a bit of NASCAR, which is a hell of a lot more interesting than cricket. The crashes are fun  And when there are two guys so close in the lead that every corner is a battle 

I'm curious though. Quite a few of the cars have Toyota Camry badges etc on them. What's that about? Are they actually Toyotas? Maybe Soarers or something? I always thought NASCAR was about American 'Muscle'. But then I did see on the telly once that since no American sedans are rear wheel drive anymore, that they have to really chop up whats available and make them rear wheel drive. Fitting 4 speeds, drive shaft, rear diff etc. That could be an opening for something like Soarers i suppose.

Or is it just sponsorship? And why the hell would one car company carry sponsorship of another?

Anyway, Kyle Busch and Brad Kesowolski are duking it out at the front right now. Better have another look-see...

Toyota, Ford, Dodge, and Chevy all make NASCar cars now. its not any variation of a street car, its just their build of a stock car. Typically the frames are identical, its the engines and drive trains that vary somewhat. There arent a lot of differences between the various car makes they all follow NASCar guidelines, its more advertising then anything else.

Today, no NASCAR on the telly, but something equally as esoteric as that or cricket- baseball. So i have another naive question- How come so many baseball players are fat? Is it all that gum-chewing? They should opt for sugar-free...

Did you see any physical activity going on?  If you did, you probably weren't watching baseball.

Someone hit the ball once, and some guys did actually run around the diamond thing. Well, one leg of it anyway. More interesting, i was watching on a digital channel, and the sound got stuck in some sort of loop. Never seen that happen before. The commentator was saying something , so the loop was about half second of "exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..exa..". I watched it like that until the ad break, which sadly had perfect sound. that's when i changed channels. Baseball is kinda like cricket, but more circular methinks! NASCAR is definitely more entertaining

Seems to me cricket is a bit more physically demanding. Baseball is generally a lot of standing around, while the other team sits. And you know they chew so much gum because of all the anti-chewing tobacco stuff that started in the 80s. Why someone has to chew something at all...well, people are anxious creatures. Not that I didn't used ta like me a good dip o Red Man or Levi Garrett back when I was a kid....but I mostly didn't chew on it.

I soooo want to see figure 8 racing. It's a sport that hails from a time when men still had balls and litigation was all but unheard of. Unfortunately, the only 8 track I know of is in Indianapolis.

I have this scale modeling book that goes back through the history of modeling. There's a big section of scale model vehicles from crazy race tracks. Another race track I would love to see are the old banked wooden tracks. Back in the 1900-1920's, motorcycles would race around on a huge race track made from 2x4 planks doing about 75-100+MPH. The Vintagent has a little bit of history on the subject. As far as I know, there's only one video in existence at YouTube:

There's not a lot of racing like it out there. Sidecar racing or maybe strapping a jet engine to a Land Luge might be on par. If we're lucky, a couple of DIYers will build and race a couple of jet packs and have an air race.

BTW, when I linked that video, I didn't realize where the location was. I looked into Figure 8 racing when I first heard about it (mid 90's) and was bummed when I learned nearly all the tracks closed. Checking into it again, it appears Raceway Park does indeed have Figure 8 racing (called Pick Your Parts? Whatever that means). Not only that, there's at least one Figure 8 track in Southern California in Irwindale.

I knew about board track racing. There was this beautiful american v-twin called the Cyclone. I saw a restored one in a magazine once. Over 100MPH on basically a Shwinn with no brakes!





It was probably this actual bike. The site i picked up this picture from says it set a world record price at auction of $551,200.00

Crown Royal 200 tonight. This seems to me a bit like 'take some NASCARS and kinda make 'em like Le Mans cars'. Strangely, they race these Grand Ams with production cars, like Porsche GT3's and Mazda RX8's. Reminiscent of the old Bathurst 500 race in Australia up to the end of the 80's, where you got to see RX7's against Jaguar XJS and Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons. Ah, those were the days
