diy keyboard encoder, posible?
« on: July 31, 2009, 04:28:27 pm »
Have anyone made a keyboard encoder from scratch? so far i found this http://arcade.50megs.com/encoder/encoder.htm but with no pcb layourt or software downloads,  i tried buttonbox 2http://www.leien.info/buttonbox/ but the components are not avilable here local and buying them online makes the proyect wortheles, so i was wondering, i f in this large comunyti, has anyone build keyboard encoders from scratch, not keyboard hacks or anything ealse just keyboard encoders, thanks...  :afro:

well, not me, but looking at most keyboards they consist usually of a the keyboard encoder (IC) chip, a few diodes, resistors, maybe a capcitor or two.. and thats about it.

they're not particularly fancy design.

i do not know what the chips them selves sell for i suppose it would depend on which one you buy, but my thought is cost wise you're not gonna save much i would imagine.

if you're looking for a cheap keyboard encoder look at the keywiz eco.. i think it's like 26 bucks and i've read good things about it.

although if money is a issue i might steer you towards some cheap usb game pads.. i just went this route, i got mine off ebay 2 pads for 10 bucks total to my door.

cheap chinese pads but was super easy to follow the circuits and hack..

i believe they was the same as the ones on GGG for 6.5 each.

easier then a keyboard hack or building one from scratch and cheaper then any ready made keyboard encoder.

i will definitely be going this route again for smaller projects.
Anyone got change for a dollar?

I have used the keywiz eco on 4 arcade cabs and am very happy with it.
IMHO, it is a lot easier to use this encoder than trying to build one.
But if you have the time, and the expertise, then I would say it might be a personal accomplishment to build your own.
If you decide to build one, please post it here, others may want to try their hand at it too..

The bad side of this is that im not a component expert, dont know wich chips to use to program, thats why im looking for some help, a have bought a keywiz in the past, and it dosnt look to hard to build one the hardest part i guess would be to know wich chip to use and how to program, the rest looks easy... ill wait for help...

I've hacked a keyboard but not "build one from scratch".. Just follow the link in my signature for "how I did it".
Components are probably more expensive than a cheap keyboard anyway...

ya know im not sure what you want exactly.

you do know that the inside of a keyboard is more or less a IC chip right? that stands for integrated circuit.

other then that most keyboards have very few components.

are you wanting to 1. build one from a kit form.. IE: IC chip + any diodes, resistors, capacitors.

or 2. wanting to build what the equivalent of whats inside that IC chip?

or maybe you want to build your self a ipac or keywiz?

why dont you see if you can get one thats in kit form.. needing to be assembled?
or email that guy who's page you was looking at for help.

you said it your self you're not a component expert, and while it's true that "mans reach exceeds his grasp", it's also true "a man's gotta know his limitations"
