Fastmame issues
« on: July 21, 2009, 04:42:42 pm »
Hi guys, I was wondering if I could ask a bit about fastmame. I'm trying to use it in my cabinet because I'm getting better performance results with it than with any other mame I've tried. But, as I'm sure any of you who have tried it know, fastmame .98 has that bug where it wont properly save controller configurations, making it unusable for a cabinet. I've looked around, but haven't found a fix for that. Does anyone here know of one?

Since I couldn't use fastmame .98, I thought I would try .84. But I can't figure out how to set up my light gun for .84. I'm using the ems topgun II, so I guess the way to do it would be to have it configured as a mouse, and when I try to set the buttons for light gun in .84, it the trigger shows up as mouse button 0, which is fine. But I can't edit the config files to read the mouse axis' as light gun input since it looks like the .84 .cfg files are stored as binary instead of plain text.

So, to make a boring story into an annoying request post, does anyone know how to fix the cfg overwrite problem of fastmame .98, or configure light guns in fastmame .84?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I guess I might be able to use the version of mamep I had lying around, but for some reason it wouldn't read my controllers for any SNK game......

Hmm... my understanding of FastMame was it was just compiled with a different compiler than official mame, with zero source code changes.  I haven't used the older versions of mame recently, though; with all the major and minor changes over the years I can't remember some info, so I'm going to ask of few questions.

Does mame 0.98 have the same bug as fastmame 0.98?  (Link?)
How good support for lightguns did mame 0.84 have?  (IIRC, lightgun support was very, err, mobile around that time.)

I guess I'm saying that fastmame should be the same as official mame, but I could be wrong.

I'm not sure about either of those actually. I'll see if I can find any info on the config but in mame .98, but I'm not expecting to find any. As for light gun support in .84, I just assumed it would work if I had some way to manually enter in the configs since it recognized my mouse click. I guess I need to look more into these.

As far as I know, normal mame .98 didnt have any issues. The problem I'm having is the same one as in http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=41840.0 but the solution there was to roll back to .84. Which would work except for the light gun issues.

I've considered simply making another game list for my light gun games that runs off another emulator, but I'm not sure how to do that in mala. All the other emulators I set up simply use file names as game names which leads to uglisness for mame. There might be an option to point a mala other emulator to a game list...
