Can I please get these components identified
« on: July 15, 2009, 09:38:53 pm »
Hi, im not very good with electronics, but if i can find out what these two components are, i could easily replace them. If i could get the part numbers of proper replacement from Mouser Electronics or similar that would be fantastic. Thank you and the two parts in question are below. And the second pic measures 926ohm.

The first is probably a transistor of some sort.  If you can ID who made it (e.g. a logo), the manufacturer's website may have a part number decoder to back out a full part number from the short marking on the package.  It looks smaller than a SOT-23, so maybe a SC-75 package?  Tough to tell without a size reference.  If you don't care about an exact replacement, just determine if it's a bipolar device or a FET then if it's NPN/N-Channel or PNP/P-Channel.

It could also be a diode.  Sometimes diodes (single and dual with one terminal commoned) are placed into that sort of package. They are often used for ESD control purposes.

The second picture is a surface mount ceramic capacitor.  Looks like an 0805 size, but again, it's tough to tell without a size reference.  I'm surprised it measures finite resistance.

Here are some new pics for size reference.

The bottom pic i did measure it while it was still soldered to the board. You really lost me on that first part. But i see no logo on it, just the markings "W1G 74" If it helps this is a control board for a "Mighty Mule 500 Gate Opener" that's suffering from a lightning attack, bad thing about living in Florida :hissy:. Anymore help or suggestions. And Mighty Mule customer help is out of the question, tried it and no help at all. This is now the second gate opener to get hit by lighting, getting really annoying. Please someone help me try to get this one fixed. Thank You.

I have found that when lightning does damage like that, it has probably fried several more components that are not showing it.
You may be wasting your time on replacing the two components. (But you may not be, who knows?)

I dont know what a Mighty Mule 500 Gate Opener is, but if it is opening a metal gate as the name suggests, you may want to sink a couple more ground rods and attach them directly to the metal gate.
Lightning is seeking a path to ground, sometimes the surge is so great that the conventional ground rod is not enough, so it finds other paths to help make up.
(Some engineers think the current flow is from ground to sky, but lets dont get into physics here.)
You may need to call the power company and ask them to do a ground check on your property, or at least recommend someone who can do it. (It's a special instrument to measure ground (dirt) resistance. most normal electricians wont have it.)

Plus it would never hurt to bury another ground rod at the power entrance to the house or whatever feeds the gate opener. Hammer it into the ground about a foot or so away from the current existing one, then just connect them together with a #6 AWG copper wire.
If you decide to do this:
Do not disconnect the wire that is currently on the ground rod. If the transformer on the pole is bad and leaking current to ground, and if you get into the path between the ground wire and the ground rod, well it can be hazardous.
If you dont feel good about this, call a licensed electrician.

Thanks a lot for the info. I felt like it was a lost cause, but i had to try. The grounding is a good idea ill have to look into that, right now their is no grounding rod for the gate so that's probably not good. Thanks again.

I feel you on the lightning strikes. The city i come from has the highest lightning strike rate of any city in the world. Looks great from a distance...
