So what's up with the PS3 these days?
« on: July 02, 2009, 08:19:40 am »
In all seriousness, what's up with this console? I don't own one, but the possibility for Blu-Ray was certainly an interesting idea.

Any "knock your socks off games" out for it? Or are most also just shovelware as they try to get back in business?

The PS3 has a lower count of games but statisticly speaking the PS3 has a higher ammount of games that are 'blockbusters' compared to any other console.  Basicly the percentage of high review scoring games is highest for the PS3 compared to Wii and 360.  So overall the PS3 gets less crapware and more quality stuff... Per capita.

Using this sites criteria, what Izumi says holds true:

http://www.edge-online.com/features/games-at-a-glance-ps3-quality/
http://www.edge-online.com/features/games-at-a-glance-xbox-360-quality
http://www.edge-online.com/features/games-at-a-glance-wii-quality

However, when you consider raw numbers, which you should, cause thats all that matters, the Xbox has 1/3 more games highly rated than PS3 does.  Though to be fair, I dont know if PSN only games or XBLA games are included in those totals.  But Castle Crashers alone puts XBLA in better territory as far as I am concerned.

The biggest thing is exclusives though, so for that, check out the top games and see if any interest you more than the others.  If so, thats the console you should go with.

I have a 60-gig PS3, which means I have PS2 & PSX backwards compatability.

The only PS3 exclusive game I have is Metal Gear Solid 4, which was truly awesome, IMO.

Things I like about the PS3:
1) It's a Blu-Ray player
2) It has wireless built in.  No paying $99 for a wireless adapter like for M$
3) I like the interface for networked media servers (I use Tversity to stream content)
4) It has a web-browser...  I can use Pandora to listen to music over the home theater
5) It's a Blu-Ray player

You know that all models of PS3 have PS1 compatability, right?

This is true.  It's just that a lot of people seem to think that only BC models can run PS1 games as well.  I even saw signs at Toys R Us advertising that the 40GB PS3's couldn't run PS2 or PS1 games.  Yet the PS1 emulator has always been a software emulator anyway.

I was hoping for a price cut earlier, but it looks like they'll be doing it next month:

I jumped on the PS3 when it was announced that the 60GB versions were going to be discontinued. I have a ton of PS2 games, and wanted to be able to play them still since my PS2 had recently gone to the console graveyard.

The only game I had to start with was MotorStorm, but my collection has really grown in the past year.

Games I'd highly recommend:

1. Uncharted
2. Ratchet & Clank
3. MLB 09 The Show (Truly amazing)
4. Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
5. Metal Gear Solid 4

Thanks for your input. I find myself unemployed again (don't ask), BUT it is interesting to see if Sony made any progress since early on.

I won't deny the thing it's graphics power.  No way....very sharp.  Just thinking ahead a bit,  I suppose.

or you can download and stream the video ....

My PS3 sits largely unused, as does the Wii. I didnt buy either of them my girlfriend did so its not a huge loss to me. I bought some BluRays but they cost too much, so I usually download the HD vid rips or buy the content via live!

I was pissed I got the 80GB PS3 and it DIDNT have the mem card readers in the front OR PS2 compatibility

I still think blu ray is the only way to go i've tried streaming 1080p video I have yet to find a good way. As for ps2 compatiblity give it time i'm sure that sony has no other reason to work on cell based emulation of the emotion chip.

Might be thanks in no small part to EA. Apparently they have threatened to drop support for the PS3 if Sony don't drop their prices!

Ive streamed with TVersity, but for me I just plug my PC into my TV via VGA port.
theres only a couple PS3 exclusives, and of those only a few interest me, like God Of War.

As for telling my GF she messed up.... I bought her an expensive necklace she didn't like, so we're even :p

A 160GB PS3 scares me.  It means Sony thinks we'll need that much memory, which means my 80 gig will be obsolete.

I remember the first time I heard of a Sony PS3 price cut, it was the week after I bought my PS3 and I was pist. That was over a year ago, maybe even two years ago.  I wouldn’t hold my breath, unless the 80 gig gets cheaper because of the 160 gig.

In truth the ps3 is almost as memory hungry as a PC for installing games and downloading additional content, UT3 is a good example of both plus considering that hd movies from the PSN store take up anywhere from 4 to 7 gigs each no wonder sony wants to go to the 160gb drives. As for myself I just spent the money and upgraded to a 500gb drive and out of that I have about 340 gb left just to give you an idea of how small the 160GB can be.

I also bought a 500GB drive for my PS3. I used the PS3 mostly for playing downloaded HD TV episodes and movies. I don't like streaming HD so I put the files on the disk of PS3.

Never gotten around to installing it though since I bought a Popcorn Hour A110. Much easier. This thing has it's own torrent/usenet downloaders on board (so dowloading doesn't need a PC too be on) and it plays practicaly everything I throw at it. The PS3 is very specific about what it does and does not play.

If you stream using Tversity, the PS3 plays anything your computer can play (server-side transcoding).

But then, like I said, I don't like streaming.

I like the popcorn hour for a combination of three things:
1) Plays everything
2) No streaming or transcoding needed
3) Downloads content itself

I guess I could add ease of use, proper remote included, also doubles as a (slow) file server and stuff like that, but they are not a big deal.

I have an A100 and I agree. This is a great device. Makes my life way simpler. But no (streaming related) excuse to buy a console to get that functionality. :)

Anyway, I replied just to +1 on the Popcorn Hour.

I love my PS3, Its the best console Ive ever bought. Im lucky enough to have the 60Gb premium Version that has the card slots and emotion engine to play PS1 and PS2 games. I dont use it alot for gaming though. I mainly use it for watching DIVX films. Just whack a film on an SD card and watch. When I do use it for gaming it has to be Burnout Paradise or GTI club. I cant wait until Assasins Creed 2 comes out though, The 1st one was good but a little to easy.

Ummmm...

Why?

I have em both, and I do enjoy some of the great Sony exclusives. Unfortunately 1st and 2nd party development is an area where MS has failed miserably, but there are many areas where Sony has failed just as miserably, and there is certainly nothing about either console that has me staring at the other with disdain.

I have no faith in Gran Turismo, I bought my PS2 anticipating GT3 AND GT4 both were failures in my eyes, very pretty yet crappy racing games. Then I bought an XBOX and got Forza and it was bliss. I <3 Forza 2 and I plan on getting Forza 3 in a couple weeks. IF GT5 gets stellar reviews then MAYBE I'll pick it up but Ive been disappointed in Little Big Planet, Need For Speed Undercover (it ran like CRAP on the PS3 and it ran fine on the 360, even if the game sucked), and Resistance 2. The Club was the same on both systems, all Ive used my PS3 for is BluRay

Ive never rated the GT games, Got GT4 for the PS2 and GT 5 for the PS3. Ive only played NFS Undercover on the Eggbox 360, It was a huge pile of shite. The best NFS game is Most Wanted IMO. Forza is supposed to be good on the Eggbox and Puss 3. I still rate Burnout Paradise though, It is Excellent.

There will always be the 360 is better than the PS3 and vise versa war. At the moment they say they are on a par with each other, But The 360 is running at full whack but the PS3 still has more to go. For every 1000 RROD there is one YLOD.

This is not my opinion, Its just what ive found on the net

I just dont like my xbox, I loved the orig box, just dont like the 360, the PS3 seems more polished, all the 360 is good for, and this is MY opinion is exclusive titles, like ace combat, gow, halo etc. I prefer the PS3. I loved GT4 upscaled in 480p on my hdtv, was one of the best games ive played in recent memory. And just love GT5 prologue, I didnt like Forza 2 that much, didnt care for the forza 3 demo either. I guess its safe to say I am a GT fan boi. I have loved GT since I got my hands on it in 1998 :D

You've pretty much pointed out why I haven't jumped on the PS3 bandwagon yet, even with the price drops.  There still isn't that exclusive "killer app" that's compelling me to buy one.  I mean, DS had New SMB, Xbox had Halo, PS2 had GTAIII (back when it was exclusive), etc. etc.

The PS3 is no slouch - and in it's own right it's a damn fine machine.  But I want a gaming machine to games first and do the nice little bonuses second.  And yes, it does have some good games - but nothing that you can't get on a PC or Xbox 360* really stands out for me.

Admittedly, I'm going to pick one up eventually - but at this rate it might be a purchase in the next generation of consoles.

(*Not taking sides in a fanboy flame war - I don't have a 360 yet either - but it's mentioned for comparison's sake)

But if you want more than a Gaming machine, The PS3 is the thing to buy.

My PC never gets used for games, The Wii never gets used at all and the PS3 is mainly used as a DIVX player. Why am I building a MAME cab if I don't play games? I must be loosing it :dunno

I love my PS3 as well. I have two of the 80gb software ps2 compatible ones with about 37 ps2 games and only 1 has an issue (soul calibur 3 slows down by about 40%) the rest are perfect.  My Ps3 library is about 20 games strong and it also gets used heavily as a media station (Divx/blue ray etc).

Had both for about 2 years now with no issues...3 friends of mine have all had RROD on their xbox 360s...Ill still get one because I figure soon they should be fairly trouble free.

EDIT: Reread original post and adjusted response accordingly.

Actually, I'm with you - I'd probably do better with a media player than a game machine that's a media player.  But I definitely don't need a $300 divx player, when my $50 DVD player can do that too.  :dunno  That's pretty much my gripe with this current generation of consoles - "more gimmick, less game".  The 360 was closest to getting it right - but they couldn't make the darn thing reliable.

Again, time will tell a different story perhaps.   As of now, Sony's not trying to really play up the strengths of its previous two consoles (i.e. games).  But the price drop definitely makes it much better purchase.  And there are solid games for it.  Just not enough "exclusive" solid games.

I replaced my PS3 with a Popcorn Hour A110.

I tried the Need for Speed Shift demo. I thought it was pretty good. A bit similar to Grid, but that's a nice game too. I don't like GT5 prologue. Too much effort on "pretty" and not much in "racing feel".

The only game I actually play now and then on the PS3 is GTA 4  :P
