i havent personally used one, but since a sensor bar is just 2 sets of LEDs, i can't imagine that there is much difference between the available options.

I've never looked into it... so is that connector to the Wii only carrying power to the LEDs?

Ha.  Hadn't thought of that... so the "wireless" bars are just running on AA batteries...

yeah..just some AA batteries powering some IR Leds.  i figured it would be annoying to have to go turn the stupid sensor bar on and off every time i wanted to use it, so i just stuck with the wired one

And a port that is literally begging to have a DIY control solution for it.  ;)

My thoughts too. Might as well go with the afore-mentioned candles otherwise...

I am building my own from these instructions, parts are actually less than a wireless bar from gamestop.  I am still waiting for a few items to be back in stock from Mouser.

Can you either a 9V adapter (old cell phone or random piece of hardware) or regular batteries to get 9V.

I think I will use a cheap relay triggered by the wii's power to its sensor bar to turn the home built one on or off. Technically if I do that its not wireless, but rather not deal with the on/off switch.  I would have to stick with batteries to power it for "wireless".
