U360 joysticks and maps
« on: May 14, 2009, 02:29:04 pm »
I'm about to place an order with Divemaster for some u360 joysticks and more - one thing I can do to help the BYOAC community.

My MALA setup is almost done and I am moving on to controls.

I'm trying not to reinvent the wheel on the maps used with the u360 and wanted to know if anyone had a working collection of ini files that use specific maps (like qbert, tron, etc).  From these forums, I have found these few, but I am looking to find out if there are any I missed.

Is it true that the MAME command line version used with MALA knows to use default maps for 2 way, 4 way and 8 way for common game joystick setups?  I know that I will not need an ini file for every game, just trying to understand how this joystick works with the software and common joystick layouts.

thanks

I'm thinking about switching from the mag stick to the U360's and was curious about this as well.

With U360's there is the UltraMap program which can program the joysticks by writing to it's EEPROM. You can either program it using the command line or a plugin such as FatFingers UltraStick Plugin for MaLa or LEDBlinky or for GameEx you can use my own UltraStick Plugin.

The advantage of using UltraMap or UltraMap plugins is you can set the joystick mode for other Emulators. Using Mame's ini files only works with Mame.

For Mame you can use it's built in mapping system via ini files. You can use my Mame Analog Joystick Map Editor to create custom maps. Mame does automatically use it's own built in 2 way, 4 way and 8 way maps so in most cases you should be fine. For some special games you can use the editor to create custom maps. I've included ones for qbert and tron and also all the ones included in UltraMap in the Mame ini format.
