I saw it last night.  I liked it quite a bit.  There were quite a few plot holes, but whatever.  Ya gotta give a movie like this a little slack.  BTW, just how many black holes was Spock planning to make when he set off with like 200 gallons of red matter?    ;D

Speaking about odd accents, why would Checkov be unable to pronounce the letter "V"? Is that a reference to the original series? It's the last letter of his own name for crying out loud! The letter he replaces it with, the W, actually does not exist in Russian!
It is a reference to the original series.  The actor playing Chekov is actually Russian but wanted to pay homage by having a bad Russian accent.  Ironic, eh?

I didn't get why was he carrying that much red matter to begin with.

Heh ironic indeed. I wonder whether the guy playing Scotty had the same idea.

Maybe they will fix it in the sequel. ;D

Well both of them were indeed trying to use the same overdone accent as the original actors did. You can call that an hommage I guess, but I'd rather assume they were all told to do so. Really all the actors were doing their best to mimic the old actors style, mannerisms and accents. That's not a coincidence.

How was replacing the letter V by a W a reference to the original series though? Did the original Chekov make the same weird mistake? I have to admit, the last time I saw the original series must have been decades ago. All I can remember is that he had an over the top Russian accent and that used to say "ciptin" instead of captain.

:edit: never mind, indeed I just remembered the original Chekhov would say things like "wessel" instead of vessel.

:edit2: Downloaded the Tribble episode and Chekov says "inwented" a couple of times, but he can say "first". Silly. I wonder how he pronounces his own name. Pawel Chekow?

Ya, what the hell was that about? Maybe the Vulcan's just had a black hole ship that anyone who was making a black hole had to check out from the vulcan science academy.

Just saw it. It was good. Few small annoyances, but meh. I thought the casting for the most part was outstanding! Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu - all excellent cast choices. Uhura, Scottie were OK. Wasn't fond of the Chekov casting.

The whole romance thing was pointless and irritating.

Overall I really liked the movie. I cracked up (in a good way) at some of the homage references, and about cheered when Sulu answered what combat training he'd had. Good times.

Oh god. After his first sentence, I prayed that he wouldnt say another word.

I said a few words though. A-hole and girlffriend sitting next to me. He starting talking on his phone. I said 'mate, can you hang up please'. After a few minutes they started messing around with the stupid thing. Those things are like torches. i told the girl 'can you please switch that thing off, it's shining in my eyes. Or if you want to keep playing with it, go outside'. What the hell is wrong with people that they cant sit through a movie without contact with the outside world? I 've got a pretty short attention span, but even I can watch a movie without distraction...

Where I went we all had to hand over our cell phones. At the end of the movie you could collect the thing again. Really bizarre. It took forever to get in.

I've never been through that before. Maybe it was because it was a premiere and they didn't want the thing on internet before it was in the cinema's? But then it was out in Australia for a month already and who would watch a movie recorded with a cell phone anyway?

shmokes is right, sadly... first time something happens in one of those theaters and someone can't make a phone call they will sue the company.  I'll be surprised if they don't get proactively sued by the cell phone providers themselves or by a privacy rights group.

Collecting the cell phones ahead of time also seems like an invasion of privacy class action waiting to happen.  You know some employee will be going through all the phones during the movie looking for personal info.  Can you imagine the size of the lawsuit if some 15 year old girl's sexting photos get onto the net because a theater employee found them during the movie?

Wouldn't a warning sign be enough? Theaters show clips before the movie reminding you to switch your phone off. Just make it say that the phones don't work in the room, so go outside to get help or call for help. Hang up a wired phone for all I care.

Just like in hospitals (in the intensive care areas).

Yeah, I really hope they don't make a habit of that. If they had warned me upfront I would simply not have brought my phone (in fact I didn't bring a phone, but my GF did).

Well now you're asking about the difference between bringing a lawsuit and winning a lawsuit.  The lawsuit decides what is enough.

I doubt you can compare it to hospitals.  There are life support devices in there potentially affected by the phones.  No such imminent problem exists in a movie theater.

Man, the info theft potential on a lot of peoples' phones is incredible.  Extend it out to Crackberries... now you have a full inbox, personal or corporate, as well as everything you could need for identity theft.  I'm surprised people would just willingly give their phones to some teenager with a cardboard box.

There's no way in Hades I'd have surrendered my phone to them. And if they hadn't posted a sign out front before I bought my tickets that they were doing it, I'd have 1) ignored them and walked in with my phone, and if they tried to stop me 2) made a big fuss with the management, demanded a refund, and made a general ass of myself.

I'd put hard cash on the likelihood that less than half the people in there surrendered their phone anyway.  It's not like they can pat people down to go see Star Trek.

EDIT:  a thought occurs... if the point is to avoid cam torrent releases... are there really cell phones that can capture 2 hours of video content now?

Man, the info theft potential on a lot of peoples' phones is incredible.  Extend it out to Crackberries... now you have a full inbox, personal or corporate, as well as everything you could need for identity theft.  I'm surprised people would just willingly give their phones to some teenager with a cardboard box.
There were security guards with bodyguards taking the phones away.

I didn't have a phone on me so I just walked straight through. To be honest, I probably could have done the same if I did have a phone. They never laid a hand on me and I didn't see a scanner either.

I guess most people were just too stunned to think it over too much. My GF was going to walk in right behind me, but she chickened out and handed her phone in anyway. I don't think her phone can even record movies at all.

Well it was a premiere. I guess the alternative options would be to walk through or walk away, but most people probably just rather went in to see the movie.

The VIPs just walked straight in. Of course they didn't hand over their phones.

Indeed, it made no sense at all. Even if a phone can capture a whole movie, the quality is going to be nothing but a moving blur with crappy mono audio.

To be honest, maybe the reason was something else, but I cannot imagine what. I didn't talk to them and my GF didn't really understand what the security people said. Just that they wanted her phone.

Oddly enough before the movie started there were 2 clips remembering us to switch off our phones.

The movie was quite good.  My knowledge of star trek is probably far more limited than most here but I thought that red shirt death was pretty epic.

Quick questions:

How many movies does this make with the Romulans as the bad guys?

When will star fleet use atmospheric fighters?  Seriously shoot the fragile looking chain with spikes on it with something.

After the Kelvin was decimated why wasn't a fleet dispatched to its last location to retaliate?

Concerning this phone collection gestapo nonsense perhaps it is their intention to steal private info?  Wouldn't be the first time an employee/management did something corrupt.

Saw the movie last night. I agree with many of the positive reviews here. Great movie!

Did any one notice something missing from this incarnation of the Enterprise? It dawned on me as we were walking out to the car after the movie. Since they paid so much homage to the original series, I was kind of surprised that they didn't have it.

Oh! And the Transformers 2 trailer was a nice bonus.

OMG Transformers 2 looks so awful.  LOL, why would anybody even consider it being good to be a possibility.  The first one was HORRIBLE, which was to be expected considering it's Michael Bay.  This one looks just as retarded, and is still being directed by Michael Bay.

Talking about homage to the orginal series, I was going through old Star Trek TOS episodes and I came across The Menagerie where Captain Pike is in a "wheelchair" and only able to beep once or twice for yes and no. I never realized that South Park took that idea for the burned teacher from there.

I guess we better ignore shmokes and his retarded opion of recent Transformer movies.

Sounds like shmokes has a Micheal Bay hang-up. There were some things Bay did I didn't like with Transformers 1, but all in all....it wasn't "HORRIBLE."

But this is about Star Trek...as for what was missing, I'll give you guys a clue:
