Just seen the film at my local cinema.  There was a showing at 11:00am and there was about 5 people in the entire place.

JJ Abrams did a great job, and I enjoyed it.  I would say it is better than First Contact for action.

Go see it.

I give it 9 stars out of 10.

Yeah sorry, out in the UK today, but one cinema (the Odeon) had a 00:30 showing.

I will reserve my remarks about the film until later on in the week.  I hate it when people discuss film and the plots in a thread, and you haven't seen the film yet.  I gave it 9 of of 10 for only one reason.

I went to the Dutch premiere of the Star Trek movie yesterday. I have to agree, it's a great movie. It's not so much aimed at trekkies, but I'd say that was a good thing. Even my GF loved the movie (and it wasn't just because she got her picture taken on the red carpet).

This whole movie seemed to me like a setup for a whole new series of movies in the franchise. I hope it does well and that new episodes come out. So far it's getting really good critiques.

FWIW, it opened today in the states as well.  The official website says it opens Thursday and it is playing today at my local theaters.  I'm seeing it tomorrow, though.  Mother in law came in town today, so we have a babysitter, but tickets for todays showings were all sold out.

Rotten Tomatoes reviewers are gushing over it.  That was the final piece in a "Do I see it or not? " puzzle (I am a Trek fan, but not insanely die hard) was what the reviewers thought.

Screw the 45 million projection - if it's as good as I've heard, it may be the first film to give "The Dark Knight" a run for it's money.

I thought it was fantastic.  You can see the movie without knowing anything about Star Trek and have a great time.  There are also enough references to the originals (particularly Wrath of Kahn) to keep the fanboys happy.

Never was a huge fan of Star Trek...not even really a fan....Ive watched all the movies and 2 of the series...the original and next generation. So I knew enough to get by.

I'm more of the star wars persuasion. And honestly...I will say that this flick was better than all 3 of the new star wars movies combined.

The casting was great, story was damn good, and the FX were awesome. I wasn't bored during the movie at all. I actually had fun watching the movie. Can't say that for a lot of flicks I've seen this year.

Definitely worth seeing if you are a trek fan or not.

Also....go see it in IMAX if you can. HD picture and digital audio make it an orgasmic feast for the senses.

I think some of the footage from the early trailers did not make the final cut.  Particularly the scene showing them building the Enterprise in space.  They really went easy on the Enterprise footage which I think helped.  Seems like the first few movies spent 10 minutes or more flying around the ship so the audience could gaze at it.  This was much snappier.

HarumaN, are you talking about it's total gross or just opening weekend?  Seriously, this thing will take in well WAY more than that overall.  X-men Origins: Wolverine opened to $85 million.  We're talking about a number 4 sequel/spinoff (or prequel, I guess) after number 3 was really really bad.  Seriously . . . you're right that this will not displace Dark Knight, but $45 million is an incredibly low prediction, especially considering that it opened a day early (on a Thursday rather than a Friday).

Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who did $45 million.  XXX (that Vin Diesel action movie) did $44.5 million opening weekend.  You really think that a Star Trek reboot with the kind of hype and reviews this movie is getting could underperform XXX?  No way.  This movie will probably have a $90 million opening.  Not a $45 million opening.

Also, keep in mind the competition.  The only other movie opening up this weekend is Next Day Air.  Seriously?  You think that's going to draw anyone away from Star Trek?  Then there's Wolverine -- for one thing it's already been out for a week, and for another there's almost nobody in the world that would be interested in a movie like Wolverine, but not Star Trek.  For another, Wolverine is getting mediocre reviews at best, while Star Trek is being raved about by everyone.  Then there's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.  That's it.  That's the competition.  

Star Trek will have a huge opening, and a huge total gross.

I dunno.  I work with kids and it seems like they don't have the same ideas about that stuff that some others (we?) did when we were their age.  I think it'll attract a variety of people.

 Gota say, It was a  decent movie.

  The actors were really good.  Looked the part, and really made the characters
believable.  In fact, the characters portrayed seemed much more believable
than the original series cast.

 I was waiting the Classic lines... and when they came on,
it was a little cool.. but also a little cheezy too.

 A few things I didnt like:

1) At times, it felt like there was TOO Much on the screen.  The special effects
were WAY Overdone.  Too many collisions, explosions, particles, etc.  The enemy
ship was like a porcupine mass, which wasnt very nice either.

2) It felt a bit too rushed... and more like an introduction than an adventure. (which is
a bit to be expected.  This wasnt quite the case with Batman begins however)
Hopefully a sequel will improve things...

3) The Theater playing the film had the Volume up so high, it was painful to the
ear.  I had to stuff bits of napkin into my ears to make it bearable.  Im getting

I go to movies reasonably often and I don't usually have trouble with the volume, but in this case I felt the volume was way to loud too. Indeed especially the mid tones were annoyingly loud to the extent that indeed it was painful.

Was going to see it last night but went to a rugby match instead (Aust beat NZ 38-10!)

So saw it a few hours ago instead with a friend. Second time for him, he really loves it. I thought it was fine. I like how the guy playing Kirk seems to channel Shatner, he did a great job. I'd give it 3.5/5.

Oh, and i saw in the credits that Winona Ryder was in it? I don't remember seeing her...

Incidentally, how on earth is a guy from Holland able to differentiate between different British regional accents? I'm impressed.

Well both of them were indeed trying to use the same overdone accent as the original actors did. You can call that an hommage I guess, but I'd rather assume they were all told to do so. Really all the actors were doing their best to mimic the old actors style, mannerisms and accents. That's not a coincidence.

How was replacing the letter V by a W a reference to the original series though? Did the original Chekov make the same weird mistake? I have to admit, the last time I saw the original series must have been decades ago. All I can remember is that he had an over the top Russian accent and that used to say "ciptin" instead of captain.

:edit: never mind, indeed I just remembered the original Chekhov would say things like "wessel" instead of vessel.

:edit2: Downloaded the Tribble episode and Chekov says "inwented" a couple of times, but he can say "first". Silly. I wonder how he pronounces his own name. Pawel Chekow?

Just saw it. It was good. Few small annoyances, but meh. I thought the casting for the most part was outstanding! Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu - all excellent cast choices. Uhura, Scottie were OK. Wasn't fond of the Chekov casting.

Overall I really liked the movie. I cracked up (in a good way) at some of the homage references, and about cheered when Sulu answered what combat training he'd had. Good times.

I said a few words though. A-hole and girlffriend sitting next to me. He starting talking on his phone. I said 'mate, can you hang up please'. After a few minutes they started messing around with the stupid thing. Those things are like torches. i told the girl 'can you please switch that thing off, it's shining in my eyes. Or if you want to keep playing with it, go outside'. What the hell is wrong with people that they cant sit through a movie without contact with the outside world? Where I went we all had to hand over our cell phones. At the end of the movie you could collect the thing again. Really bizarre. It took forever to get in.

I've never been through that before. Maybe it was because it was a premiere and they didn't want the thing on internet before it was in the cinema's? But then it was out in Australia for a month already and who would watch a movie recorded with a cell phone anyway?

Well now you're asking about the difference between bringing a lawsuit and winning a lawsuit.  The lawsuit decides what is enough. 

I doubt you can compare it to hospitals.  There are life support devices in there potentially affected by the phones.  No such imminent problem exists in a movie theater.

There were security guards with bodyguards taking the phones away.

I didn't have a phone on me so I just walked straight through. To be honest, I probably could have done the same if I did have a phone. They never laid a hand on me and I didn't see a scanner either.

Indeed, it made no sense at all. Even if a phone can capture a whole movie, the quality is going to be nothing but a moving blur with crappy mono audio.

To be honest, maybe the reason was something else, but I cannot imagine what. I didn't talk to them and my GF didn't really understand what the security people said. Just that they wanted her phone.

Oddly enough before the movie started there were 2 clips remembering us to switch off our phones.

The movie was quite good.  My knowledge of star trek is probably far more limited than most here but I thought that red shirt death was pretty epic.

When will star fleet use atmospheric fighters?  Seriously shoot the fragile looking chain with spikes on it with something.

Did any one notice something missing from this incarnation of the Enterprise? It dawned on me as we were walking out to the car after the movie. Since they paid so much homage to the original series, I was kind of surprised that they didn't have it.

Oh! And the Transformers 2 trailer was a nice bonus.

OMG Transformers 2 looks so awful.  LOL, why would anybody even consider it being good to be a possibility.  The first one was HORRIBLE, which was to be expected considering it's Michael Bay.  This one looks just as retarded, and is still being directed by Michael Bay.

Talking about homage to the orginal series, I was going through old Star Trek TOS episodes and I came across The Menagerie where Captain Pike is in a "wheelchair" and only able to beep once or twice for yes and no. I never realized that South Park took that idea for the burned teacher from there.

Sounds like shmokes has a Micheal Bay hang-up. There were some things Bay did I didn't like with Transformers 1, but all in all....it wasn't "HORRIBLE."

It was a real good movie. Me and the wife thoroughly enjoyed it. The kid playing Chekov sucked. I think they could have done a little better on the Kirk casting too. Overall though, a good movie. Original Spocks part was the best part of the movie. I thought they were only going to put him in as a cameo. Quite surprised to see him be so integral to the whole plot.

Excellent movie, saw it last friday. They successfully walked a pretty thin tightrope between trekkies and non-trekkies. I heard good things about the film but have to say, it was even better than I expected. I genuinely can't think of a way it could have been improved much.

I saw the film last night. I'm not a huge fan of Star Trek. In fact I think it's the most overrated of all the big sci fi franchises. However, the films are generally at least watchable, and I was curious to see how they handled the 'reboot'.

I've got to say I was pleasantly surprised. The film far exceeded my expectations. It's actually the best film that I've seen for some time. It was just really good old fashioned entertainment, the kind of film that Hollywood does best.

As others have pointed out, there were the usual minor plot holes (which is par for the course with Star Trek). But that didn't really matter.

Of more significance was the 'elephant in the corner' introduced by the new story line. Not really a plot hole as such, but still a massive issue which has profound implications for the whole franchise, and which was glossed over in the film. I don't wish to give away any spoilers, but I'm sure anyone who has seen the film will know what I'm talking about.

Heh, Actually Kirk did briefly hook up with a green skinned babe in the movie! I thought that was a nice touch.

That's one of the things I really liked about the movie. It sent up a lot of the old star Trek clichés but remained respectful to them nevertheless.

Saw this today... good movie.  Too many shots of "parts of space stuff" like so many of these movies do now... but good movie.  Better than I thought it would be.
