Dont buy pinball machines, they break!

Bittersweet victory today, I vowed not to touch the dead JP until TFTC was restored but for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to swap CPU's & just get an easy fix taken care of.

The problem is still there, F!

So that means I now have a cheaper but more difficult issue to resolve.

Sheesh, well at least the MAME monitor fixed itself (for now).

Let me take that pile of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- JP off your hands for you. I'll even come get it and haul it off free of charge. Well, nearly free of charge. I'll have to drink one of your Redbull & Vodkas and challenge you to a game of Sinistar.

that's what makes it a challenge. Doesn't the arcade have an 8 way? I know the multi-Williams boards support an 8 way. You play Time Pilot, same concept.

I believe the original arcade had a 49-way joystick.  For the multi-williams boards, the game was modified to use an 8-way joystick.

In Mame, it runs like it should using a 49-way joystick so to play it correctly you would need a 49-way.

I think all of this is true anyway.

pretty early game for a 49 way. But I don't have any proof to contradict you and I'm too lazy to look for any.

Haven't read it yet, but it's weird, I was just looking at this:

http://urebelscum.speedhost.com/49waySticks.html

Got to reading a little and started fantasizing about jettisoning my Ultimarcs and hooking up the 49 ways that came with my cabinet. After further review, this looks pretty hairy. Even converting them to analog seems to require hardware and software. And since my damn mame pc runs Vista, well, we all know how finnicky mame add ons are. I may just buy myself a couple of 360's for x-mas this year...need to do more research.

Also after reading this article, now I know why I suck so much more than I used to on Sinistar and Pigskin. :'(

Yea me neither.  You would most likely have to restore one.  Or build up new from scratch.  I'm sure the boards are available somewhere.

Looks like I will be making a stop at CP next month. It will be the weekend of the 10th & 11th...don't know which day yet, but leaning toward friday. Wife may come along if she wants to...although she will put a dent in my beer supply.

You should've bought one of those on CL last week.

So how was CP? Anything different this time? Anyone kick your ass at TSPP? Did you get your bro to haul you up there so you could pound Redballs and vodka?

I cant buy any new pins for a while :-( Must fix my 3 broken ones, a semi defunct ---smurfing--- MAME monitor (why did I just "have" to do a CRT) & a pool table first.

Chucks was fun tho, I made a damn night out of it, spent the full 6 hours there & brought a buddy. @ 8pm I even hit up PizzaHut to pick up a pie while getting BlueMoons @ the groc store. I found that resting in an ice cold car eating hot pizza & drinking cold beers for 30 minutes or so really gives you a 2nd wind for the rest of the night.

BTW it was friggin hot in the back room, I was sweating but it was still worth it.

He has a few new machines but I think all 6 hours were spent on TSPP, WOF, FG, Vegas (dont ask why), STTNG & MB....seriously.

May have to try that pizza trick next month...although a kinda despise Pizza Hut. That sucks about the back room...hopefully that is rectified by then.

Some jackass on CL has a shopped JP for $2500...come on moneybags...just buy a new one and put the broken one out on the curb. Be sure to post when said machine is going to the curb.

What are you using for a monitor on your mame? Looks like a showcase...maybe a 32"? I've got a decased 27" flat CRT Toshiba. Same as Uncle Bubbles, but his is a lot sharper than mine. He claims it's because I'm using S-video and he is using component cables and a DIVX adapter. I tried that setup and couldn't get it to work. I don't really have any problems except when working in windows...it is way too blurry and you are asking for a headache. But with MAME, most games are fine.

That CL seller with the JP also has several other pins for sale on CL right now - most of which have been on there for several months.  He also sells those same pins on E-bay.  His prices are probably $200-$300 more than even the high range for every title he sells.  He also has Cruisin USA, Golden Tee and other some Multi-cades that are through the roof on price.  Its interesting to note that he just keeps reposting those items always at the same bloated price.  I would be curious at this point if he would be willing to haggle since they dont see to be moving.  I've heard some not-so-great things about him though so I doubt he would haggle.  I guess he's willing to sit on his investments until he gets what he wants.  Good luck.

Ya pizza hut does suck, I prefer Imo's or Pantera's but the deep dish Pizza Hut pepperoni just takes me back to the good ol days. Plus its the first pizza place my GPS found within less than a mile of the seepeezie.

LOL @ throwing the JP out on the curb, yeah right that thing may leave my house someday but not in the trash.

I am using a 33" Wells Gardner piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- CRT authentic pain in my ---smurfing--- ass......until I put in the LCD.

You know my damn xbox elite died too so I bought a new one to get me by till the old one gets repaired........damn that was 30 days ago TODAY so tomorrow I get to beg my 31 day return policy.........Oh well, walmart will exchange it for another NIB so at least I can peddle that one on ebay & minimize my losses.

F this drama, 3 broke pins, 1 broke xbox & a damn CRT hunk or crap......now my chest hurts, F!

So if you switch to an LCD, are you going to try to find something with a 4:3 aspect ratio? There's not a lot of that out there anymore, especially that large.

What is up with those XBoxes? A co-worker had to do the same thing...seems like they break a lot. Nothing gets done around the house when I have a new game to conquer, so wife has forbidden the XBox. Kids have a wii that I am not as impressed with as everyone else seems to be.

Found a new game to play last night: Blood Bros. It's like Cabal, except you're cowboys in the old west..and it's played with a joystick instead of a trackball. Moderately fun...probably because I am the master of Cabal due to all the quarters I dumped into it at Big Moe's back in the day.

Hot-n-Ready (Little Caesers) is about to run Pizza Hut outta town. That is a damned fine pie for 5 bones.

I was thinking of using a 32" LCD, the actual screen would be 15.7x27.9 with an effective 4:3 area of 26" this is at a cost of $350.

Part of me says go with a larger screen (like a 37") but the buy in jumps substantially & then I remember "this is for street fighter & pacman, not Apocalypto" Plus this will affect speaker placement....meaning with a 37-42 the speakers will not fit inside the cab.

This is something I can put off for a while, the monitor is doing better & I have more important projects like 3 pins & a pool table so since I am the only one who can notice the current flaw it will be put on the backburner for a few months.

But after those pins & billiards are done....this ---smurf--- is going LCD faux show.

Well, this is some mighty fine weather for working in the nice, cool basement.

Back to a previous topic: Sinistar does suck with an 8-way. It sucks even worse now that I know it's not me, but the controls.

I believe the original arcade had a 49-way joystick.  For the multi-williams boards, the game was modified to use an 8-way joystick.

In Mame, it runs like it should using a 49-way joystick so to play it correctly you would need a 49-way.

I think all of this is true anyway.

This is what happens when you let the kids from STL run on about things ... jrok's MW board can use a 49-way (or an 8-way if you are insane).

Well notice I said "I think this is true anyway".  You damn Canadians cant read can you?

So are you saying a Multi-Williams board would have to have a 49-way installed to play this game properly?  Dont most MW cabinets have just 2 8-ways?  I've always wondered that about MW cabinets since you have such diverse control requirements for all the different games......Defender (2-way), Robotron (8-way) and Sinistar (49-way).  Like I said, I thought the answer for this was a modified game.

Please lay down the law Cheffo and I'll return the favor by getting off your lawn....

jrok's board supports an optional 49-way for Blaster and Sinistar, or will map the P1 8-way if that is all you have.

If you want to use a 49-way, you would install that as an extra stick.

So I'm assuming this board is not compatible with a standard JAMMA harness (2 sticks, 4 buttons each, p1,p2,c1,c2). I know my SF2 had a Jamma plus harness to make room for the 4 extra buttons. Do they make a special harness? Is there some kind of hardware/software adapter(s) needed to make a 49 way behave like an 8 way?

Let's pretend Flake and I have limited knowledge as far as cabinet hardware.

We dont need to "pretend" on my account..............if it doesnt come with an IPAC I wouldnt know what to do with it.

I would assume based on Cheffo's comments that the jrok board has a special harness and that if you wanted to use a 49-way joystick you would have 3 sticks rather than 2 on your control panel.

You should get off your dead ass and convert that empty Defender cabinet into a multi-Williams. I'll even donate a 49 way.

Let's pretend Flake and I have limited knowledge as far as cabinet hardware.

Well, it'll be a real stretch, but I'll try my best ...  ::)

jrok's board connects via a standard JAMMA harness, but has headers available for non-JAMMA connections used on Williams machines.

a 2-pin header for Positive Hori and Positive Vert Sync
a 6-pin header for P1B5, P2B5, P1B6, P2B6, Menu and High Score Reset
a 12-pin header for external soundboard out and 49-way joystick input.

Also has a jumper to run in board in VGA mode.

I don't know, you have to weigh the cost of a pc and an ipac vs. the MW board and the JAMMA harness. You have the cost of a monitor and cp either way. Only you are restricted with the MW to an arcade monitor or a vga.

Then you have to figure what you'll gain from each. Unless you are going to put a steering wheel, flight stick, 49 way (which from what I gather, mame doesn't support), or rotary stick, what are you gaining from mame'ing it? You already have the ability on your existing machine to run the standard games. Then again, you have the ability to play most of the games on the MW board already too. You'd just have more authentic controls.

Since it is a Williams cabinet, I'd seize the day and go MW.

Yea but I would really have to completely sand down the entire cabinet and buy stencils and then repaint the entire cabinet...........

There is no way to salvage much of anything about it other than the wood itself.  It would be a complete overhaul from the ground up so the fact that its a Williams cabinet in my mind doesnt really add much to it.

It will most likely get Mamed at some point with different controls than I have currently.

I really dont know, any suggestions would be appreciated.  My current mame cab has 8-ways and a 4 way, trackball and a spinner.  If I mame this cabinet it would only make sense to have different controls on it to play other games that my current setup doesnt play well.

Perhaps a 360 degree racing cabinet utilizing that 7 inch wheel from Randy + 2 usb pedals.

You could use a PC monitor, I have 2 here you can have for just one single beer.

I think he is holding out for a cockpit for a driver mame. Ole Dave from Madison told me after the fact that he had a cockpit some guy bought at SA that he pulled the board out of and gave to Dave. He said he would've given it up for $10. Of course this is worthless info after the fact. One of these day I'll have to stick around til the end of a SA and check out the parking lot action.

So I'm thinking about hitting CP this weekend...still up in the air about which night. PW79...didn't you say the AC wasn't up to par the last time you went? The forecast this morning said 95 for friday. That could affect the decision...or I may just say eff it and go to the Queen.
