Sorry for replying to this OLD post but I finally got it working today! I bought a new Xbox 360 from Target for $130 and it came with a $50 gift card too (they must be preparing for the NEW Xbox 360). Anyway I started working on this again because I wanted to get Super Street Fighter IV working on my candy cabinet. Sure enough, the LM1881N circuit made the picture perfect (as I guessed over 1 year ago).
If anyone is looking to do this themselves, here are some pointers:
- Use the official Xbox 360 component cable
- Modify the cable to enable "SCART RGB mode" according to this PDF (see page 7):
http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/tutorial/Xbox_360-HandC-V1_4.pdf- The wires on the inside of the component video cable are pretty easy to figure out
-- Thick red wire -> red video
-- Thick green wire -> green video
-- Thick blue wire -> blue video
-- Yellow wire -> composite video / sync
-- I used the shielding wire for the ground and it seems to work fine
- Create the LM1881 circuit according to the diagram on Gamesx.com:
http://www.gamesx.com/misctech/lm1881.htmNote: I'm no resistor color code expert but according to the color code of the resistors I used (Blue(6)-Grey( 8 )-Orange(x1000)-Gold), they were 68K-ohm and not 680k-ohm which the circuit diagram calls for. This seems to work fine for me.
- I grabbed +5v for the LM1881 circuit from USB but you may be able to grab it from the video connector.
More notes:
1. I used an old 2006 Xbox 360 when I initially created this thread and it did not work. I now have it working on a US NTSC Xbox 360 manufactured 2010-01-28 (and a 2007 model) so I suppose only the oldest models can not do RGB right. See here for more evidence of that:
http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=33912. In the Xbox 360 dashboard's display settings, it will say SCART video (which I didn't expect since I'm in the US). You may be able to use this information if you're troubleshooting your homemade cable.
I am so thrilled now and I have attached a picture which is not really going to help anyone; it's just proof that it works. I hope this helps someone!
