is there a good working EMU for sega saturn?
« on: April 08, 2009, 10:40:05 pm »
any one know of one?
I have looked never  got one working.

I kind of think EMU'S for consoles are dying off

NU64 EMU'S have not changed in a few years
Sega Saturn seems adrift.
there were some good games for these systems.

I understand the DreamCast , PS2, Xbox
a HUNKING PC will be needed for those systems

NU64, Sega Saturn Not so much a big PC in today's standards.
I base that on PS1 Emu's are fine

My best system specks.
2.6 ghz CPU
1 gig mem
64 meg  agp 4x vid card
windows xp home sp3

main console playing PC
1.8 ghz gate way
512 meg mem
XP Pro SP2
64 meg 4x AGP card

Not accurate... the Saturn is a complex system with multiple CPUs.  It's a very difficult emulation to write nevermind have the processing power to pull it all off.  It's possible the average desktop PC isn't beefy enough to pull that off yet.  We're talking about two CPUs, two video chips, two sound chips... they really maxed out the hardware potential of that system.  In fact that's why the great Saturn games took so long.  The learning curve for that unique platform was way too steep even for Sega's developers.

Once you get up to N64 you're talking emulating a 64 bit CPU (running on a 32 bit bus) within a 32 bit emulation system... you hit a wall really fast in terms of what is possible there without some really fancy coding footwork that won't be necessary if people just wait for the next level of hardware to come around.

never new that about the saturn.
Thanks

Never even thought about the NU64 as a 64 bit  :banghead:
now 64 bit PC's are coming out do you think the NU64 Emu's might kick back into gear?

IMO the limitation there will be the interest level.  It may be a while before someone with that level of skill and dedication picks up the N64 again.  Homebrew of that complexity requires a lot of someone's spare time, and it wouldn't be your average coder, this one will be an expert.  That's a cmpsci grad school project.

Satourne and SSF are pretty good.  I had an easier time with SSF, IIRC

Here you go: http://yabause.org/

Even works on a single core processor, unlike SSF or Satourne.
