Ok..who remembers why my mame cab is running Windows 98? :D
« on: April 01, 2009, 03:52:27 pm »
For the life of me I can't remember why I set up my MAME Cab to run windows 98, but as I recall there was a very good reason.

....
....
I just can't remember what that reason was :D

Was it MAME32 not liking XP?  Was it DAPHNE not liking XP?  Was it something about the IPAC or OPTIPAC I installed in there not lking XP?

Damned if I can remember :P

Anyone remember why we all stuck with Windows 98 back in the day :D

I dont have an answer but if anyone knows about XP conflicts that would help two people out at once.

Don't have an answer to your question, but whatever reason you had for using Windows 98 don't apply anymore.  Windows XP is probably the most popular choice (don't hold me to that statement) for current arcade cab builders.  It runs everything you mentioned just fine to my knowledge.

If you're system is quite old, then Widows 98 may still be the best choice.

For a while there were many devices that did not work, like older motherboards / soundcards. The footprint of 98 is really small though if you are runnning older components that don't have a lot of horse power. The only reason I could have seen you holding onto 98 is that it was the last hurrah of dos, and if you were running arcade os that would work perfectly with 98/dos.

ok, so what hardware are you running?  any joysticks on a game port?  I am willing to bet it was a driver issue.

No joysticks on a gameport.  Its a (now ancient) Athlon 1700...I think 1.4Ghz....256 megs of ram, an ATI 7500 class (I think) videocard with S-Video out.  Running a barebones install of Win98, mame32 and daphne.

Hardware is one Ultimarc Ipaq and one Optipaq.....4 player control panel, P1 and P2 have 6 buttons each, P3 and P4 have 5 buttons each (one button included in the joystick top on P3 and P4).......and one spinner.  Oh, and 1 4-way joystick.

A few extra P1, P2 and coin slot buttons too.

I don't recall ever having the problems I've seen other people have with XP and mame or Daphne, or even VP. The only things I can think of are some kinds of office workstations (though the ones I've gotten I've had no issues with), and server machines. Or, in general, anything not powerful enough, and made before, XP. But definitely, the convenience of a UI in set-up, with being able to fairly easily put it away and have it completely out of the way, 98 was and could possibly still be a motivator.

1.4ghz processor is a little lean for XP, without Nlite or TinyXP.

I used Win98 in my build 4 years ago just because I happened to have the install disks (my XP comp didn't come with the disks) My only problems came from it being 1st ed, and it wouldn't support USB 2.0.

However, after installing a new motherboard, and not having the 98 disks around, I'm going with TinyXP, or possibly Linux... :dunno

oh crap! I have XP running fine on a 300 meg CPU.
I also have a 700 meg HP computer that will not run XP
Its up to the motherboard if it will run xp.

All the ones I've tried, they run slower and slower the lower the processor. A 233mhz one I tried was laboriously slow. When mentioning such things, it helps if one describes how they installed it and whatever modifications they made. If there weren't any (of the latter), I'm inclined to call ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---.

I actually got tinyXP (beast edition i think) to run on a P75 64mb ram just to see if it would work. You got to really cut it down tho to work on that old of hardware.

I agree, TinyXP works great on several of my 300meg (and up) cpu's. Amount of RAM made the most speed difference's in my testing.

I'm guessing you wanted win98 for DOS apps.  :dunno

Not exactly that, but just inadvertently being misleading. Now that he's explained, it makes more sense. But he also didn't say what version of mame, and whether he's running hwstretch, etc. And lastly, mspac isn't very intensive. When someone says 'running mame', to me it's implicit they can run a butload of games from various eras, at least through the 80s.
