48in1 speaker, amp needed ?
« on: March 21, 2009, 06:51:54 am »
Quick stupid question: can I hook up a speaker directly to a 48in1 or do I need an amp ?

It's standard JAMMA and has it's own amplifier (plenty loud too!) built-in. Speaker connects directly to the JAMMA edge connector same as a conventional JAMMA board would.

Has an on-board potentiometer for volume as well as adjustment via software in the config menu.
NO MORE!!

That's a good thing to look at too.....

About this board, I wired up P1 and P2 start buttons and the original Puckman joystick.

I set "dipswitch" 4 (on DS2) to on so all games would be on freeplay. However I can't start a game at all.

I think I saved the set-up by pushing the P2 button after changing the setting to ON.

Do I properly have to leave the test mode or something to save the setting ?

I don't know about the 48 in 1, but with the 60 in 1's I hear you get better sound if you use an external amp. Some of the games the sounds are horribly over modulated (1943 for example) and supposedly you can clean that up a bit if you use the headphone out and an external amp. (I haven't hooked mine up without an amp so I can't say for sure) I built mine from some old PC speakers and a project box I got at radio shack. (I don't know if you have one over there). I just took out the amp from the speaker and soldered it to some speaker wire and ran that to the cabs speaker. I mounted it just behind the coin door so I can adjust the volume whenever I want, which is nice.

Edit:  The menu is not quite self explanatory, but if I remember correctly I think you have to hit P2 after every page you make changes to.

Did you go to the page in the menu where you can test all the buttons to make sure that they all work.... I'm sure you know about that but I am just trying to save you some time before you physically start tracing grounds.

Do you have the demo mode on ?

If it's in a demo hitting player 1 or 2 will only bring it back to the main selection menu, then you have to navigate it to a game, press fire to select that game and then player 1 or 2.
(or something like that)
Is that what you are trying?

I found those odd to navigate until I got a bit used to it.
But I've only built a couple for others who couldn't wire them up, I don't actually own one.

And yes, I found it best to hit the save button after every change in the setup menu.
I don't know how many times I forgot to do that and then scratched my head going "WTH ??".

U-oh.....this is a Puckman cab guys......no fire button. Yet.

I do think it's in the demo-mode. It starts with the menu where you can select the games but I can't move the cursor with the joystick (tested joystick in test screen and works). Then it starts demoing all the games.

I'll have to add some buttons for the test and service buttons to make it work a bit easier than shorting the wires.... :D

Double check your Freeplay option stuck in the menu.....save it again if you have to.... or try to coin it up and see if it works then.
Even in demo mode you should be able to navigate the selection screen with the joystick, push Fire to view a particular demo and then player 1 or 2 to start a game. (if it in the middle of an automatic demo you'll have to hit a button to get back to the selection menu)
At least that's how I remember it being, someone who has one up and running might have a better explanation of the events.

As I said before, I have a 60 in 1 as apposed to the 48 in 1, so some things might be a bit different. On mine demo mode comes up by default and you have to hit one of the player buttons to get out of demo mode in order to navigate to a game. You can't navigate the selection screen while in demo mode. The navigation menu is visible in demo mode, and they look the same until you start seeing attract screens.  If its not in free play mode you have to add a credit before you can press a player button to take it out of demo mode.... sounds to me like you don't have free play enabled, and I would recommend checking the physical dip switches again  :)

Wait a minute, the physical dip switches ? There's only 1 with 4 positions right ? The others are software only right ?

Hadn't have time to check the machine yesterday, but I'm actually pretty sure there must be something wrong in the button wiring, probably a loose connector....

My bad, for some reason I was thinking that free play was set with the physical dip switches, going into my menu though, I see I was mistaken. Sorry about that!
Edit: If your having fun with getting the button wiring sorted out, you should try getting a Wico trackball up and running with a 60 in 1(Yes they have green boards and yet still do work)

Uhh....no trackball support on 48in1 and don't have any desire to put one into that unique Puckman CP :D

Figured out some stuff. The free-play setting is not DP-SW 2-4 but 2-3....it's obvious in the texts under the "Dip Switches".....
Set it and works now. I can select and play games (well the one's without fire button).

No sound though. I tried fiddling with the pot and the software setting.....no go. I've measured the original speaker wiring (removed it from the original PCB connector) and it's 4 Ohms so I'd expected it to work....

There shouldn't be anything fancy in getting the speaker running, it should just work.  Have you tried selecting a game and seeing if it has sound? If not, you could have the demo music turned off in the menu (which I recommend, it's rather annoying) Do you know for a fact that the speaker you are using is good? I suppose its possible the on board amp is bad, but you still have the audio out jack you could use... which brings ya back full circle here doesn't it?!  ;)I'm glad you got the free play issue sorted, like I said those menus and configurations are somewhat confusing at first.
