Area 51/ Max force help...
« on: July 15, 2008, 07:53:43 pm »
Ok, heres the run down.  I just got a working max force cabinet.  I have a area 51/max force combo board and plugged that up.  I have 2 hard drives for it and pluged both up and got this message both times. (see pic) Now its possible that both hard drives are crap as the one made a funny sound and the other has a strange hum to it.

I checked, and rechecked the connections.  All are tight and where they should be.

Security key firmly in place?

IDE cable can only go in one way and is all the way down.  Security key?  Still new to this so forgive me when I ask...what is that?

Tiny little chip thing on the board.  It can be knocked loose.

Well I looked and far as I can tell the board is good to go.  Everything in its place.  The maximum force board is identical to the area 51/max force board.  So I am going to get a new hard drive.  Probablly do the flash drive.

Did you physically press everything to make sure, or just do a visual inspection?

Could this be one of the Hard Drive games out there that is ultra picky about the size and make of the HDD attached?  If it is, I'd check and see that the Hard Drives you're using are the same as the ones that initially came with the game.

(Then again, if the HDDs you're using are the originals, then ignore what i've stated.   ;D )

2): 35,600
3): 30,100

Well in the mean time while I wait for the flash drive to come, how do I adjust the monitor to get rid of the lines and to focus it?  I adjusted EVERY dial on the remote board and on the board behind the monitor but I cant adjust focus nor get rid of the lines.  Is it possible the monitor needs deglazing?

Focus and screen are located on the flyback, which is located on the main PCB.

flyback controls how sensitive the monitor is to turning on?  If so I found that but I still can not find focus.

no, screen control is raw brightness.  Adjust it and those lines should disappear.  Focus should be directly above or below that.

Ok, I got a remote board that has all those controls on it.  3 of the dials do nothing but the brightness does work and no matter which way I adjust it the lines remain.  BTW thanks for all the help!

Please listen: the screen control is on the flyback.  It controls raw brightness.  You need to adjust that before you even think about adjusting brightness on the remote board.

Focus is also on the flyback.  Right next to the screen control.

Ok, I will fiddle with it tomorrow.  I did notice that parts of the screen were almost in focus while other parts were completely out of focus.  Thanks again.

I have a Maximum Force PCB I was trying to get going. What kind of hard drive does it take? 2GB? I believe mine is the Max Force only and not a Duo.

If you are having problems with your Duo board you might want to try this. It seems to me the only difference between a Maximum Force and a Maximum Force / Area 51 Duo are the socketed chips. Maybe just try swapping the Eeproms first and if that doesn't work try the security and ram chips too.

BTW: I used a 4GB hard drive on my Duo board and it seemed to work ok...til the board died. :(

Well, I did not give up on the flash drive but I dont have time to fiddle with it right now so I went ahead and bought a replacement HD.  Came in the mail today, hooked it up and BAM!  I now have a working area 51/Maximum force board!!! :applaud:

Is the test switch in the ON position when you power-up the game?  That 'THREE TAPS AND YOU'RE OUT' message is usually only seen in TEST mode.

No the three taps message is for an error.  My hard drive now works and I only get the message when I am in game play and decide to mess with settings in the test mode.  I switch it over get the message then the game resets and everything is well.

Im guessing you get that message if you dont have the security chip also.  I tried to turn a regular Area51 into a Max Force /Area51 combo.  All you have to do is replace the harddrive and 4 eproms.  but it seems you need that little security pcb also.   You can run the game fine but once you start to play it, it gives you that error after about 6 seconds of playing either game.  I just need that chip of even figure out whats on it so I can possibly make one.

I have an Area 51/Max Force. I bought it from an arcade that was closing. It didnt work... one problen was the hard drive. I put a new HD in but now I get the REAM error. The screen comes up, I choose the game I want, then the mission, then sometimes it will let me shoot a few "bad guys" then the error code comes up, usually after picking the mission the error code comes up. when it does, I can hit the start button 3 times and the game select menu comes back up (to chose Area 51 or Max force) I have taken out and reinserted the 4 security chips incase there was a bad connection. Any solutions on this?
Thanks,

I think you may want to start a new thread for this and also try a search.
