I need help on attaching casters . .
« on: March 18, 2009, 03:30:25 pm »
I have 4 casters to attach to the bottom of my cab. They are plate casters . . the wheel is attached to a square plate with a hole in each corner. Its supposed to be screwed or bolted in. I'm assuming bolted.

Look, I literally have no idea how to do this. Is there some basic guide on learning how to use the tools?

I seriously need like a "Tools 101" course.

Or if somebody can just give a quick guide . . I've googled and googled and this seems to be just common knowledge to everyone but me. Do I bolt/screw right into the wood to keep them in place?

Thanks

(I'd really appreciate a good guide on the BASICS on tools/wood-working . . something for beginners)

you definitely want to bolt them in, and be sure to use lock washers, and the largest bolt size that will fit through the hole without interfering with the operation of the wheels.

Do you have any friends that know wood working, a school that teaches wood working, or something along those lines?

It's not required, but you're going to get into using power tools pretty quickly when it comes to working with wood and it's probably a good idea to have someone teach you hands on how to use some of the most basic power tools. Such as drills, routers, saws, etc.

No sense in losing some fingers for a cabinet.

Putting casters on is pretty simple. Position and mark where the casters are to go. Note your drill hole locations. Drill a hole where the bolt is to run through and like Hitek explains, use the largest bolt that can fit in the caster hole without interfering with the caster. I would use washers on the opposite side of the bolt to spread stress across the wood.
