Movies that make grown men tear up...
« on: March 18, 2009, 01:38:09 pm »
There aren't many. So what movies made you fight-back the watershed? We've all been there, stiff upper lip, fighting back even the appearance of glossy eyes so the wife don't make a big deal, etc. Which movie broke the dam so-to-speak?

A recent one for me was this movie with that dude from Growing Pains....didn't really care for the 'righteousness' stuff, but the plot and ending were very good. And seeing 'Mikey' pull off being a complete A-Hole was interesting.

This is the movie that was a tear-jerker:

In Cheerleader Autopsy, when dude goes on a bad trip and chops off his junk with a dull meat cleaver... and it takes multiple whacks... I cry every time.   :scared

Two weeks ago I was watching my sister's kids and a  family channel was having a Finding Neverland - with Johnny Depp marathon.

It was a warm and fuzzy movie so I didn't expect the ending.

Cyrano de bergerac, the one with Jose Ferrer.

So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

When my wife and I first saw it in the theatre, not a word was said the entire half hour walk home.

I've since recommended the movie to many of my friends who were thinking about having kids.  Its the reminder that, "all that kids really want is just to be loved by their parents."

I haven't seen it, but if you're an SF reader, then it's really old hat. Read the original Bicentennial Man, even. Very similar.

I don't watch much of that kind of drama, just because I have no need for it, but what immediately comes to mind in a topic like this is Terms of Endearment. Saw it at thirteen or so and it still tops in my memory.

Parts of the film were good but the tacked on happy(ish) ending slightly spoiled it for me. It would have been a much better movie if it had been directed by Stanley Kubrick as was originally intended.

I loved Gran Torino, but no, I was laughing at Clints singing at the end.

Though my wife was bawling because the dog lost its owner.

There are a few.

- Brian’s Song was probably the first movie to have that effect on me.

- Titanic. No, not when Rose lets Jack go; although I bought into the lovey-dovey love storey, it didn’t hit me that hard. But when they end up in the water when the ship splits in half; the camera is centered on Rose and starts to pull back, then back, then back some more, which now shows several hundred people all crying out and you know aside from a couple pulled out of the water, they’ll all croak.  For whatever reason, that was a strong scene for me.

But for me, the movie that hit me the hardest was:
- Field of Dreams. When Costner tells his father (with a slight tremor in his voice) “Dad, do you want to have a catch?” I lost it!  Thinking about it right now, my eyes still well up.

Honorable mention: Catwoman.  Seriously, the idea I’ll never be able to get that 2 hours back was too much…

It didn't make me tear up, but after watching "Requiem For A Dream" I was so emotionally "spent" that it felt as though I had been crying for hours.

I have to agree that Shawshank was damn clever. Though it didn't make me cry, I do believe this is one of the most profound movies I have ever seen. The whole metaphor of "Andy Dufresne, who crawled through a river of ---Cleveland steamer--- and came out clean on the other side." I find very poignant. And to think that this was written by Stephen King! I had no idea just how good of a writer he is until I saw this movie. I had a whole new level of respect for him afterwords.

Stephen King will put you inside the head of his characters better than any other writer I've ever read. He's also an incredibly sick ---fudgesicle---! Don't believe me? Read Gerald's Game.

Some of his best work also comes in Short Story form. Romance? Yeah he is good at that too. The 4th Dark Tower book, Wizard and Glass, is a prequel of sorts and is a tragic romance story with steamy sex scenes and everything. I felt like storing my copy in my wife's romance collection after finishing it. Goodness knows it has to be better than anything else in that section.  ;D
