Basically I've got a MAMECAB thats several years old.  I'm using an original Ultimarc IPAC and their device thats designed for spinners (its been so long I forget what they are called!)
for my cab, and I'm running MAME32 version.... .089 I believe, from a few years back on a 1.4Ghz Athlon.  I believe this release plays CHD files, almost all of which were unplayable on the box as its currently configured.  From memory my PC did fine playing the "latest" releases at the time, which were the D&D side-scroller games, all the SNK/NeoGeo games, I think Metal Gear III or IV was one of the big ones around the time of this release.

But I haven't kept up on my MAME.  More and more obscure clones were being released, and more and more games that wouldn't be playable for another 20 years were also coming to light.


Question: Can someone give me a list of the major game releases that are playable on later versions of MAME? You know, for every 20 games released maybe 1 is "Wow this is worth it".....can someone hook me up with that list?

I understand this is very much subjective, but thats ok...I'm just curious if its worth it to upgrade the cabinet or not, and that includes hardware at this point as well, although I'm not buying a new PC jsut to play "Crusin World" when I can just as easily run my PS2 and Gran Turismo 4 into the TV on the cab.....

The only thing I know of is big buck hunter.
the only thing thatjust drives me insane!!!!!
if you up grade make a GOOD back up of your old Mame Roms.

you might later on have a free PC drop in your lap and need the older versions.

Yeah I kind of figured there wasn't much new that was playable or revolutionary that was out, am I right in assuming that most of the MAME releases from the past couple of years have been either largely-unplayable CHD type games, or more and more puzzle/obscure Asian type puzzle/card/etc games?

There doesn't seem to be a web=page out there that lists the major impacts from mame over the past few years...its all buried in those .txt files with each release and, unless you know the name of the game you are talking about, you're SOL.   

Thanks for the info.  Big Buck Hunter probably needs a light-gun :)

Very subjective.  Why don't you do a deluxe search over at the new MAWS site, results: report, resource type: parents, driver status: good, and cumulative changes since: 0.89.  This will list every parent that has had any changes since 0.89, so you probably will want to sort by "version" and only look at the games after 0.89.  The only problem you'll have with this is a few false positives when the parent set was changed to a newly added rom set of a game that's been in mame for a while (examples:     Pit Fighter and Street Fighter Alpha 2).

Just doing a quick skim, I see Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy (0.91u1), Golden Tee (0.92), SNK vs. CAPCOM (0.103u2), and Metal Slug 5 (0.103u2).

Not to mention the laserdisc games that have been working their way into the latest releases.  Daphne doesn't play a couple of them (FireFox, Cube Quest, maybe others), so a newer version of MAME is the only way to play them (if you're interested in them, of course).  Also, Soul Calibur is now playable, although I still prefer the Dreamcast version.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Thanks guys, it looks like a few games are on the list...I'm not familiar with any of them short of the obvious Cap/SNK fighter, which really doesn't interest me.

Question: What about those Sega AM2 boards like Fighting Vipers and some of those racing games.....did those ever get playable in MAME?

Err, looks like Sega AM2 is a software development department of Sega that did games from After Burner to Virtua Fighter 5, not a hardware platform per say. 

According to system16, Fighting Vipers is on a Model 2(b) board.  Model 2 emulation is still very WIP, but you can find preliminary drivers in mame.  Other model2 games include daytona and virtual fighter 2.  Again, still WIP and not fully emulated.

There's another emulator out there that runs the Model2 games quite well.  If those interest you, you'd be well served to give it a try, if you haven't already.
