My avg has expired
I see its $40.00 at Wal Mart for 2 years
before I pay up I thought I would ask what others think is the best
AVG worked OK for me . It did not allways get the virus out
I had to re do my system a few times

I've used AVG's free software. Never paid for it. Still virus free. If you wanna pay, shell out 2 grand for a Mac. They never get a virus!

I use and recommend Kaspersky Internet Security. I've never gotten a virus/worm/trojan/anything. The only thing I don't like is the spam filter but that is because I use IMAP email and I don't think any client-side spam solution works well with IMAP.

No antivirus program will catch everything, but if you want something other then AVG (which is what I currently use) then I'd agree with the recommendation of Kaspersky.

I just took AVG off my system. After version 8 came out, I had nothing but problems with it. More often than not it couldn't connect to the update servers and the average time to scan my system went from 45 minutes to 3 hours!!

I read a recent article in Maximum PC that rated Norton 2009 very high. Norton apparently completely rewrote the entire product. I got it on sale on their website for $50 for a year subscription. You can install it on up to 3 PC's.

I personally hate Antivir. We use it at my office and I've had to clean viruses/trojans from 5 computers over the past year. Yeah, the users are fairly computer illiterate but it shouldn't be letting them run trojans from email attachments.

I use the free home version of avast. It has worked great. I recommend it to everyone. It auto updates so people that are lazy don't need to worry about it. That has been my problem with other people with the free ones like AVG. They would never update it and they would get a virus. Then they would come to me.

The latest version of AVG (which came out a while ago) put auto updates and scheduled scans back into the free version. It bugged me when they took them out in the last version of AVG, but was glad when I saw they were put back in.

I'm using AVG but was also wondering if there was a better solution. To me the most important thing next to timely updates and catching virii is how much an impact it has on the system. Since an AV constantly checks files being opened and accessed and written, it can really slow things down.

Which one is fastest?

For prevention, Kaspersky and Spybot's 'Immunize' function every couple of months (since it basically creates a HOSTS file).
For infection clean-up, Malwarebytes Anti-malware (Has never failed me).

Hey lookat me I'm posting!

I use A few antivirus programs between work and home. I think they all have their share of problems but that said I use Avg on one PC avast on another and Symantec (Norton) at work. The two free apps work just as well. I think Avast updates each time you boot which is a mixed blessing. It's always up-to-date but slower PC's take a hit in productivity. AVG seems to work well But it's not perfect. I've heard good things about Antivir, I'm sure it's just as good.

Bottom line is that you're probably just fine with any of those three free antivirus apps.

I've been using AVG for the last two years. I had Norton before that and it was pretty good, but I decided to stop paying for service (on sale for fifty bucks?? - it used to just BE thrity or forty!). A few months ago, I even stopped using Ad-aware, because AVG finds cookies and stuff. Everything seems fine. The only issue I've had with AVG is: sometimes I've started up my system what has appeared too early in the morning, and the update didn't take place that day until the afternoon or evening, and I had to do it manually.

I use nod32. Great anti virus and not annoying, as in it only notifies you went it detects a virus. Easy interface and plus it doesn't pop up a updating window every single day.

The only thing I don't like about it that it's email checker only supports outlook. Other than that it is the best anti virus tool I have used.
