I had a 27" TV in my arcade for years, running Mame32 0.94u, and everything worked fine, but then the local university was selling some of their old equipment, and I picked up a nice 29" CRT monitor for $20 from them, swapped it into the arcade, updated the windows resolution to 1024 x 768, and now the horizontal games play fine, but all the vertical games don't fill the screen like they should (and kind of get squished to the bottom left portion of the screen).

I have tried adjusting the resolution settings from "auto" to match my windows resolution, and while that does stretch the vertical games to fit the screen properly, the game runs very slow and the sound gets glitchy.  Does anyone know any way to fix this?  The games ran fine in the old TV, and I'm tempted to stick that one back in, but this CRT was such a good deal, and it looks so nice and sharp, I would love to get it running perfect with it.

In general, the higher resolution you run games in MAME, the more processing power you will need.
Have you tried using Direct3D rendering instead of direct draw?

I don't think my video card supports Direct3D, when I tried turning it on games didn't even load at all. I have a pretty basic video card in there, it was the cheapest I could find with tv out, nothing fancy.

????...jesus, how old is it? How old is your system?  Also, show your mame ini settings before and after.

If the card doesnt support directdraw then it wouldnt even be able to play a video properly.

Check you have the latest drivers, and check that the performance slider in the display propertys has not being turned down to nothing, as that will disable acceleration like directdraw etc...
