my worst issue is that some games work fine, some that are not perfect sends my arcade monitor into a frenzy :-(

I have high hopes for Mamewah who mentioned somewhere that he might be redoing his resolution tool  :applaud:

Anyway, it would be GREAT if there was a Wiki started that had the EXACT resolution that a game needed to be set to for the AVGA card.  Or perhaps MAWS could have this feature added?

Several problems with this:

1) There are different versions of AVGA with different available modes.
2) There are many different screens (ie some might support modes other do not).
3) People's screens are adjusted differently (ie some will display more lines than others).
4) Opinions often differ on which is the 'best' mode.
5) Someone would have to manually make a choice for each new game, each new Mame version.

So I would say there is no point even attempting this.

Edit: I forgot:

6) Different monitor orientations (h / v / rotating).

What sort of frenzy? Maybe your v-hold needs tweaking?

Decided to have a quick go...

MAME Resolution Tool v3.1

Have done some quick testing - seems ok, but feedback would be appreciated.

Edit: Copy & paste the link into your browser as Mameworld doesn't like outside linking.

Just setting up my new Polo21, works really well, got every game i've tested perfect :applaud:
The only option i'd like to see added is one to enable hardware stretch for verticle games, otherwise you loose the top and bottom of them, but I can live with changing the ini files for the few of them I actually play.
Cheers :notworthy:

If you are losing the top/bottom of *some* vertical games, it might be your monitor adjustment...I have my screen adjusted for ~256 lines so that horizontal games fill the screen nicely. The downside to doing this is that 288 line modes end up with the top/bottom cut off (eg puckman).

If this is the problem, then you could just delete 288 line modes from your Available Modes list. I have these 288 line vertical games setup at 640x480 with hwstretch...this is done automatically using the 'Settings when ideal mode not found' (or something like that) option in the menu.

The alternative possibility is that the Res Tool is picking up modes with not enough lines, which it shouldn't really do, *unless* there is a reason such as you already deleted the 288 line modes, or the refresh rates are not suited to the game. Or it could be a bug...if you give me a few example games and what mode has been picked I should be able to tell you which...
