Why no large >24" hi-res crt monitors?
« on: January 09, 2009, 10:26:28 pm »
Just putting this out there...

The biggest monitor sporting a high resolution that I've heard about was the Sony 24" widescreen (forget the model number).  While I know the gaming industry has all but moved to LCD already, but I wonder why no one made a large, high res CRT for gaming purposes.  With input lag, and response times of LCD monitors not being quite up to par with CRTs I just can't help, but feel like it would have been a cool thing to see.

I know there are large format CRT monitors of 27, 33, and 39 inch varieties, but I haven't seen any of them coupled with a chassis that will allow them to do a real hires image.  Maybe Rick Nieman will churn something magical out that'll do at least 1280x960.  Or maybe I'm just dreaming for something nobody else wants.

What would the technical limitations be for doing something like that?  Obviously cost would be prohibitive, but this is a fantasy product...Any ideas?

Well, I think this is the biggest high-res CRT ever commercially released.

http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors/mitsubishi/megaviewpro42am4201r.html

http://cgi.ebay.com/MITSUBISHI-MEGAVIEW-PRO-42-AM-4201R_W0QQitemZ160308799437QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090108?IMSfp=TL090108114004r34900

They're pretty rare.  The maximum resolution is 1280x1024.  But the dot pitch is .96mm, which is very coarse, so I'm not sure how well that tranlates to a monitor like this.

I personally own a 37" Megaview, and I have watched Blu-ray movies on it in 1280x900 (it's seemingly highest available resoluton), and it looked beautiful.  Maybe not as crisp as some new LCD's I've seen, but still much much better than an SDTV.

The only thing that was bigger was maybe one of the individual parts of one of those jumbtron monitors.

Philips had their last series of Tube-TV's equipped with a flat screen and 1080i support.

Guess they can be bought for a few bucks second hand now.

Watch out.  Many of those CRT HDTVs were single resolution.  They always ran at 1080i and just upscaled everything, usually poorly and with a lot of latency.  Not ALL of them did that, but most seemed to.

I think the reason you don't see a lot of high-res large monitors is simple.  There's not enough demand to justify a single resolution (or just high res, no CGA/EGA/VGA support), and doing a multisync that'll go from CGA all the way to 960 progressive lines at 60Hz is complicated and costs money (again, lack of demand, but this time at the required pricepoint).  Perhaps rickn or some other monitor manufacturer can prove me wrong.  I'd love a high-quality 27" (viewable) CGA to SXGA or thereabouts arcade monitor at a ~$450-550 pricepoint.

I need to take a picture of the inside of my big monitor.  It is just plain scary.  There are like six different motherboards, humongous  heat sinks, a fan, and two more boards on the neck.

This thing was expensive when it was new  :embarassed:.

I think about the closest you're going to get these days is this monitor:

http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/49271700.htm

It has a resolution of 1024x768, not quite as high of a resolution as you're looking for however.
