the movie. started last week, only just got a chance to see it today. wasn't sure if it would be my cup of tea. and still not sure. part of my opinion is coloured by the fact that it's set in and around my home town. and of course wasn't filmed there (cheaper to film in queensland, closer to production facilities) so of course i was distracted by the fact that the town didnt look right. also some of the countryside wasn't in the territory either. but no one else will be bothered by that. I'm sure new yorkers must get annoyed about movies filmed in toronto or vancouver but set in their home town.

so the movie? well, it's a meeting of 'gone with the wind' and 'pearl harbour' set in the aussie outback i guess. the beginning was annoyingly comical. hugh jackman is inexplicably MORE buff than wolverine, which doesnt make sense for a stockman, who are normally pretty wiry. but i guess it fits in with the whole epic feel. the kid who narrates the story is adorable, and certainly helps tie the movie together.

it is epic- 165 minutes. but id didnt feel like it dragged too much.

score? not sure. i gave quantum of solace 3.5 out of 5. i score purely on entertainment value. doesnt matter what genre. for instance, a couple of days ago i saw 'big stan' starring rob schneider. i recon thats about a 3.5 too, because it entertained me equally as much as quantum.

it's at least a 3 anyway. take a chick with you

just curious if anyone else has seen this? so far i know two people. my housemate saw it and she loved it. and a friend of mine who used to work on oil rigs and now drives trucks hated it. i was thinking maybe the fact that he is gay might soften his opinion. it did not

Forgot about this thread - well maybe it's because I've tried to bury any memory of this movie under large piles of poo.  The movie has stereo typical characters.  It's definitely a chick flick due entirely to Hugh Jackman's character being the rough outback bloke that can do everything, get's his shirt off once or twice (all the chicks were drooling at this point) and then scrubbed up into a gentleman a little bit later. 

I wasn't sure what type of movie it was supposed to be - everything pointed to it being an epic romantic drama, but there were to many corny one liners and little jokes that made it seem like it was just a nothing movie - not a comedy, not a drama, not serious, just something mashed up in between.

It was long and should have ended when the first rains came and I wouldn't have mind, but it went on from being about the farm and suddenly turning into war.

I guess I was somewhat entertained, but would have preferred to stay at the pub and drink while the Mrs went in to drool over Hugh.

Took me a while, but I finally saw this.

Indeed the beginning really had me wondering if they wanted to do some Crocodile Dundee western movie or something. Luckily the comedy ended quickly and the next part came.

The movie felt like a soap series crammed together in one movie. There are several more or less distinct episodes. Every time I had the feeling the movie ended and then it simply started the next episode. Quite weird.

My GF like the movie better than me, but I thought it was sort of OK too. Guess a 3 out of 5 sounds about right yes.

You often present this idea that you are proud that the rest of the world (outside of the US) means ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Which is exactly the sentiment you were giving here again. The typo only strengthens this sentiment.

It's a movie about Australia and an Australian guy is asking if we saw the movie and (I'm assuming here, but) he seems rightly proud that a high profile movie was made about his country (even his home town).

So your joke struck me about as funny as if you said to a black guy that "The color purple" is crap because there are dem niggurs in it.

BTW See how hilarious it is because I made a deliberate typo? Otherwise it would be offensive, but the typo really makes it hilarious.

I give the Bwittish good work at the moment. Online shopping there is lovely with the Pound on par with the Euro. Only drawback is Royal Mail. They are making a mess of many deliveries by teaming up with the ALDI part of Deutsche Post (Selektfreight).

About the movie: don't dare to go there in the theater. The critics in the papers were very bad here. Although I love Kidman, she has to wait till she's in the rental store. I hate contemporay theathers anyway, the whole movie without a break (damn big film holders/digital projection) and sitting in the smell of Popcorn and the sound of phones (not the ringing but the clicking). Me go to sleep in 80% of movies, unless they are fabulous, so I need an espresso/beer half way. Which theather has a break and serves beer nowadays? I know only one, in Wageningen, not around the corner.

I have NFI how this thread got so off track (obviously I just dont get the significance of the above arguments)... but back on track (kind-of)...

I haven't seen this movie, and don't intend to, and from everything that I saw during the promotion period, the movie itself just seems to be an embarrassing promotion of Australia, which (being named what it was) only succeeded in being way overconfident, borderline arrogant.  It also came at a very bad time because a multimillion dollar tourism advertisement is probably mis-spent given the international spend on tourism at the moment.
