What are some cool Wii games for 10 year olds?
« on: December 04, 2008, 09:41:30 am »
My children will be receiving a Wii console this Xmas and I have no idea what games are most popular.  I do not want to buy anything super violent (blood, injury, etc..) so perhaps someone can list a few good rated games for a 10 year old.

My wife indicates my kids like the Wii boxing game.  If I get the boxing gloves for that game, can the gloves be used for any other "good" game as well?

Boomblox, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros Brawl.

True, but he said 'good rated' which narrows it down quite a bit.  :P

The following get the most play at my house.

Mario Kart (I can actually beat my 10 y/o on it)
Super Mario Galaxy (this one makes me dizzy, which way is up?)
Super Smash Bros. (it's not a cut and slash fighter but more of a knock your opponent out of the ring type of fighter)

If you're posting on this forum you probably already have all the games emulated that they could ever want but if you don't believe in that.... Check out the games you can buy on the "virtual console" which is like an official emulator inside the wii.  You might just want to hand them a few point cards with the console on xmas morning.

If you're looking for real games Mario Kart Wii is not my thing but my kids love it.  My 11 year old daughter is a huge fan of Animal Crossing, and Super Mario Galaxy (which she finished with no help!)

Finally, you might want to try Okami very cool watercolor style imagery

That trailer doesn't really do it justice, you play as the white dog.  I love how plants grow in the wolf's wake very cool.

Besides the already mentioned Boom Blox and Super Mario Galaxy, my 5 year old boy likes (in order of which he spends most time on):
- Barnyard (nice storyline, lots of little games, collecting stuff, sandbox style)
- Excite Truck (great racing game with amazing speed sensation and bizarre stunts)
- Pokemon (the game is not that great, but he loves Pokemon)
- Bee Movie (simple games within the Bee Movie theme. He loved the movie)
- Chicken Little (nice first person shooter type game for kids)
- Lego Batman or Lego Star Wars (which we play together).
- Cars (Driving around collecting stuff and playing little race games)

He also plays Mario Kart now and then, but he gets upset by the randomness of the game. So he switches back to Excite Truck.

He's 5 though, so maybe Bee Movie, Pokemon and Cars are more for smaller kids like him. I think the rest is good (if not better) for older kids.

He loved Ratatouille too, but he couldn't play that on his own. I had to play it for him and he would watch. I'd bet a 10 year old could play this game just fine though.

I just got him Samba de Amigo. For now he's loving that to death too. Not sure yet how long he will keep on playing that though. I personally don't like that game at all (rather play Raving rabbids for a similar but better party game).

Thanks for the replies.

Based on your input as well as looking into reviews, I am going to get the following games:

Boom Blox
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Mario Kart Wii

Actually, is "Mario Kart Wii" the same exact game as Nintendo DS "Mario Kart"?

Also, does anyone know whether "WarioWare: Smooth Moves" is a good game or not?

Don't put too much believe in reviews. Especially the reviews for games for the kids are usually way off. They rate them on how much they like the game themselves.

On the other hand with those 4 games you might want to play the games too. That's a bonus.

WaroWare Smooth Moves. It's a party game. Some people love it some hate it. My GF loves it, I think it's reasonably funny (when played in a group).

MarioKart wii has most if not all of the tracks from the ds version, n64, and I think gc versions as well as some new ones, along with new vehicles and you can race as your own mii, I would definitely recommend getting enough steering wheel's for everyone who want to play they are like 8 or 10 bucks each.

Most people I know who own it say avoid the steering wheel and use the nunchuck, instead.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

One more question

I was just at Walmart and I saw a "Guitar Hero" Wii package which comes with two guitars and the game.   The guitars are stated to be "wireless" which has me concerned a bit.  Does this mean each guitar has to have batteries in it to work and then I will have to keep replacing batteries every week if my kids play the guitars a lot?

No, you just put the wiimote in the guitar shell (so it's using the wiimote's batteries and wireless connection).

I forgot to mention that game.  My nieces (around 10) both love that game to death, especially with two guitars.

I'm thinking about getting Wii fit for one set of my nieces and nephews, the other set already has it and they enjoy it a lot.

They're are 7 and 10.

I saw a Wii fit before and the person had a pedestal thing which a person stands on when doing the Wii fit stuff.

Which pokemon game is it?  If you plan on getting virtual console games I'd recommend puzzle league and stadium 2 for its mini games.

Isn't there a monkey ball for the wii?  That might be good.

Which pokemon game is it?
It's Pokemon Battle Revolution. He has 6 Pokemon and he battles against computer opponents. The game seems to be mostly designed as a sidekick to the Nintendo DS based Pokemon game. All the other game features require a DS with a Pokemon Game.

There is. Hardly played it though. Don't remember why not. Should try it again I guess.

I just found out in order to use one of the wireless guitars for "Guitar Hero", I would need to take off the battery cover from the Wii remote and stick the Wii remote into the back of the guitar, attaching a cord to the Wii remote.

This seems like a pain in the butt since I would need to remove the remote from the guitar in order to play another game.   Seems like I would need to insert/reinsert the Wii remote many times.   Perhaps I would need to get two more Wii remotes I guess.

Does anyone have the wireless guitars for the Wii which react this way?  If so, is it a pain?

I don't have the GH but I have a couple of the Mario Kart wheels. All my Wiimotes have the silicon jackets but none fit inside the wheel with it. It's a royal pain in the ass to pull the jacket on/off every time so I bought (a fourth) Wiimote just to leave in one of the wheels and my GF is pestering me for a fifth one. I'm a stickler for keeping the colored silicon jackets on and not playing without them. Kid grime grosses me out I guess.

That said, I figure it wouldn't all that different with the GH controllers. Pull the silicon jacket off, pop off the battery cover, insert and connect. ---fudgesicle--- that. I'll pay the money for an extra one.

You don't have to take the battery cover off the wiimote, you just take the little cover off the guitar slot where the wiimote goes.  You 'wire' it into the guitar via the nunchuck port.  It's hardly a big deal and I wouldn't worry about it since you will most likely play the game for more than 1 minute at a time and switch to another.  It isn't much worse than having to attach the nunchuks for wiisports boxing after a tennis game.  Having to worry about another two sets of dead batteries in your extra guitar hero wiimotes would be far more annoying.

I agree with pbj about those covers and jackets.  I have the old remotes that didn't come with anything and got the free ones from nintendo and quickly discarded them.  Besides the annoyance of having to remove it for guitars and wheels, they get in the way of the wiimote charging docks like pbj said.  Seems like a pretty useless accessory to me since nothing was really designed to accommodate it.

That's what you get when you let lawyers design things.   ;)

And I agree with ahofle about the ease of insterting the Wiimote into the GH guitar.  It's actually rather painless.  Plus, when you play GH, most of the time you'll be playing for at least five minutes and likely more so it's not like a terrible waste of time.

OK, thanks for the information.

It just occurred to me that the controllers are wireless (of course) as well.  Does the Wii console come with a way to recharge these controllers?    My wife says I need to buy a recharging station for them with some rechargeable batteries.

How the heck do you recharge the Wii remotes ..... and if I need to buy a recharge station, then what the heck is that?   A link would be great so I can see exactly what it is.

Ditto.  I was thinking Call of Duty....

I'l throw out another game:  Super Paper Mario.  I first tried it and it was just ok.  Finally started playing it for more than 5 minutes at a time and I really enjoyed it.

We also got Wario Shake it Up in a package deal recently.  It's ok.  My step son, who is 9, likes it alot.  Better suited for kids than adults.

Here's a link to a charging station.  It comes with two battery packs that you use in stead of disposable batteries.  When you aren't playing, you rest the Wiimotes on the stand to charge.

That link is a good charging station, I have the same one.
Be careful as there are cheaper charging stations that charge via usb through the Wii and only when the Wii is on, I would advise on getting one that charges via wall outlet.

That's the one I have.  If you have a CostCo near you, they have them there for $21 or so.  My only complaint with it is that the wiimotes don't really 'snap' in.  You have to fiddle with them and move the strap around until the charge light comes on.  If you so much as breathe on it while it's charging, the wiimotes can come off the charging contacts.

I bought mine at Meijer and it was about the same price.  I definitely agree about them not snapping in.  I actually take the straps off to charge to make it easier.  Still, for the price and the convenience, it's well worth it.
