PS3: Little Big Planet
« on: November 15, 2008, 12:51:11 am »
This game looks absolutely incredible.  It's probably the first PS3 game that makes me want to buy the system (unlike the previous wave of FPS games).  The reviews are pretty much phenomenal too.  Has anyone tried it?  I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about it here.

Yeah, I've been in the store with the box in my hand 2 times already. It looks really slick, but I just can't shake the fear that it's going to be hopelessly childish. I don't play with stuffed animals anymore, so I'm not sure if a game featuring one is aimed at me. I never liked platform games much either. On the other hand it also looks a bit like Lemmings and "The Incredible Machine" and I did enjoy those.

I'm still undecided wether I will like BioShock, Call of Duty 5 or Little Big Planet better.

Do you like Pixar films, or Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker?  Or Parappa the Rapper?  Cos my position is that cute can be done right.

With the exception of Toy Story and the Incredibles I would not have watched any Pixar movie if I didn't have a kid. I don't like Zelda and I don't know who Parappa the Rapper is.

I don't mind the cuteness itself, but it usually indicates that the game (or movie) is geared towards an audience that I'm personally not part of.

On the other hand I did walk out the story with a copy of Raving Rabbids TV party for the Wii. That's a lot of cuteness too and I do think it's great fun. That's a nice game to play together with other people (although it's starting to be a bit too much of the same by now). That's what I would hope for with Little Big Planet too. That it's a game my GF would enjoy and maybe my kid too (or we play it together).

Cute game but not kid easy, when you get to the wheel of death you quickly find out it's not kid easy. My wife likes the game, a couple of guys at work say their girlfriends  love playing split screen. The controls are floaty no mario / sonic here, word is a future patch will fix the control issue. The game held my attention for a solid week, I finished the story mode, but I found when I don't play with friends online the game got boring pretty quickly. Weird thing after playing for a week I had this uncontrollable urge to jump into warhawk and kill anything that moved. As for building your own levels it takes a lot patience as the create mode is not intuitive and can get frustrating quickly. It seems for every great user created level there are 10 crappy ones out there. Some user created levels are made just to get the trophy, so no thought and planning went into them.

Our opinion?  Absolute disappointment.  My wife and I had been anticipating this game since it was first announced.  She picked it up immediately upon release and we played it that night.  The style is fantastic, like nothing else, great atmosphere, and a joy to look at.  But after that, it's pretty much just a platform game with less than precise controls.  All the while, you get to collect stickers and items to place in levels that you create.  Creating a good level takes a lot of effort (as evidenced by the majority of junkers available to play online) and I admittedly just don't have the available time to create a worthwhile and fulfilling level.  So, for us it's just a cute game with nothing terribly engaging about it.  I'd recommend a rental before a purchase.

its the  only PS3 game I have, I only got the PS3 for BluRay (Im a movie buff) and my GF bought the game. Shes likes it but shes not very good at platformers. Shes been handing me the controller for the hard parts more and more as she goes through the Mexico levels.

My impression of it is a simple platformer with sometimes spotty controls. it feels like a really good tech demo. I wouldnt have spent $60 on it but then again I was dumb enough to buy TNA iMPACT! wrestling*shrugs*

I like the game. It is an acquired taste however, and your either going to love it or not. The levels are pretty interesting and lengthy unlike *cough* Super Mario Galaxy *cough* I haven't made a level yet, I need to collect more items before my ideas can come to fruition  ;D I also haven't played it in 2 weeks, but thats due to the fact of me just getting Gears 2, dead space, and resistance 2. Like the guy mentioned earlier rent it first to see if you like it, the gaming industry needs more creative and different games like this IMO.

Wow, 4 mediocre reviews from here.  Why the hell is this thing getting such godlike reviews from EVERYONE!?!

Because of people like me who think it's great  :)

The levels included in the game are really fun and some are very challenging (especially if you're trying to "ace" it to get the extra items).   My kids love it (wake up everyday saying "can we play little big planet?") and I'm fairly addicted too.

I guess how much you like the game really depends on how creative you are, because the "create" aspect of the game sets it apart from just another  platformer.  I completely disagree with the person saying the create mode is un-intuitive...it can't get much more intuitive with the flexibility they give you.  Rods, bolts, explosives, switch triggers, emitters, wood, sponge, metal, etc...  You can really create anything you want.  Just walk through all the tutorials and you'll pretty much have it, IMO.    If you want good levels, obviously that takes commitment...but as far as "intuitive", it's all right there with your right thumb  :)

The flexibility in the create and the physics involved is really just amazing.  As mentioned, there is some garbage on the created levels, but there are also some gems.  I find 1 or 2 every time I get online that are like "wow, that's very imaginative!"   To see the possibilities, just search around youtube for a bit
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Little+big+planet+best+online+levels

My main beef on the game is the search, as you "heart" levels, but there's no way to search for the most hearted levels (you can see which has the most as you browse, but can't filter by that to narrow out the garbage).   They really need to fix that.

Looking at those clips, the sound effects, creativity, "build your own levels" stuff, detailed physics modelling, the end level fireworks and even the cutesy characters remind me of Boomblox on the Wii.
