I used to stream exclusively, but doing some math I figured out its just cheaper to throw in an ebay drive than to keep my server running 24/7/365

I'm building an HTPC and will probably put XBMC on it.  It works great on the Xbox, but it can't handle high-def content so I needed a faster platform.  The PS3 might have been my choice if they'd only release one that doesn't look like a grill.  Until I can stack it, I don't want it.
I use xbmc on 2 xbox's and my htpc. I put the HTPC together out of spares using a p4 3.0ghz and it runs all my HD stuff great. If your planning on going the htpc route hack the xbox remote reciever as it still works the best with xbmc. Also give the new mediashow interface a try for it its absolutely beautiful. Only warning for an XBMC based HTPC is stay away from ATI cards they are not very well supported and in my experience the colour on MKV's with nvidia cards is much more vibrant. Dont throw away that xbox though as the SD content still upscales a hell of alot better on the original xbox.
