Read about that a little while ago.

So kids under 10 can't be held responsible for their own actions in AU? Insane.

Here in America, cops slam kindergarteners into desks and handcuff them. It's the American way ;D

That wasn't a cop.  He just told you he was a cop.  He also didn't really have candy in the van, did he?

I'm sorry but that's an attractive nuisance and you better have some damn good fencing.  Kid grabbed some lizards and threw them to the hungry crocodile, I'm not sure why everyone is acting like he's some monster.

...don't forget the part where he bludgeoned others to death for his own amusement.

But yeah, the farm is definitely accountable for the ease of access.  So are the kid's parents for not knowing where their 7 year old is for that length of time.

So no blame for a reptile farm that's so unsecured a 7 year old can wander around and get into dangerous animal pens?

Oh, sure.....it's the zoo's fault.

Shut up.

It's the parent's fault for not knowing where their seven year-old was.

So the young Michael Myers there was drawn to animals that could be murdered easily, and that's someone else's fault?

What he did isn't their fault but his ability to get into the animal pens is 100% their fault.  There are multiple layers to this problem.

I know when I was seven I could squeeze my way through most security gates.

It's not a problem most zoos face, though. It takes something like this for these things to change.

As was said, the zoo should've had better precautions, but the fault lies first with the kid, and second with his parents.

The zoo is legally responsible for preventing access to dangerous areas.  There is no way to even debate that fact - it is clear and proven law everyplace in the US.

EDIT:  ...and likely in Australia.   ;D

Good thing you added that edit, because I would've called you on it ;D

I'm just sick of the blame everyone else mentallity of modern society.

(Though in this case, the zoo could've had better security in place)

I dunno, I find the story hilarious personally.  Shame the kid beat some of the lizards to death, but I'm sure we all snuffed a few small animals as kids.   :-\

Do you guys really think a 7 year old can't be unattended for 30 minutes?  Really?

Unattended is different than missing.  Are you suggesting the parents knew where the kid was?  I have a 7 year old.  He's not in my sight at all times but you can be sure that I know where he is at all times when I'm the adult in charge.

How do we know the kid was missing?  He could have said "I'm walking to the park, see you in an hour".

That qualifies as missing.  Missing = do not know where the kid is at that moment, even if the kid lied.  If your kid is lying to you and sneaking off then you as a parent are accountable for fixing that.  Yeah, kids do it, but it is the parent's job to prevent that one way or another.

I don't even have kids and I think this sounds ridiculous... You would let your 7 year old go walking in the park all alone?  Or go anywhere by himself for an hour  ???

Yeah, and when I was seven (1984), I wasn't allowed to leave the yard without permission. The one time I disappeared without my dad knowing where I was, when he found me, he whupped me so hard I have no memory of it.

I thought it was funny too.  It reminded me of the Aligator Farm in Buena Park (across from Knotts Berry Farm) as that place was an accident ready to happen.  Well 3 people died there, so I guess so.

Besides in Australia I thought that Crocks, snakes and spiders were a everyday thing.  Why have a zoo - when the whole place is one.  :laugh2:

Sometimes I think Singapore has it right with their caning punishments. That kid deserves 20 lashes or so. Why the hell would he do that? I could imagine being in a group of delinquents and screwing around, but to go in by himself in such a cold and calculated way...that kid has issues.

this is why the parents must share some of the blame. how are they raising him that he does these things?

2 - this is Australia we're talking about.  those people are tacky as hell...

No they don't, it's barbaric. They don't cane kids anyway. On the other hand, kids are watched all the time in SE Asia. Most Singaporeans are raised by maids, so they have someone watching them 24/7 . Apart from that we have cameras everywhere so people are used to being watched.
