question: Pc monitor or tv screen?
« on: August 03, 2008, 05:37:38 pm »
Hi,

I'm building an arcade machine.
And have a question about the monitor.

The old monitor that was in the cab originaly was broken and incomplete(no chassis).
At the moment i'm using an 21inch PC monitor.
I'm thinking about buying a 27inch 2nd hands tv screen and put it in my arcade.

what should i do?
stay with the 21 PC monitor or get an 27inch tv screen and try to get it connected to my pc?

My arcade, work is progress:

What is the manufacturer and model of your 21" screen?

Some 20" and larger monitors have the ability to do the same resolutions of arcade monitors.  In that case you definitely want to go with the PC monitor.

It's a PC monitor so very unlikely to be able to handle 15khz resolutions.

You mentioned SCART, so I'm assuming you are in Europe?  If so, definitely get a TV and try for an SCART connection (basically the same as an arcade monitor then).  There is a sticky thread in this forum with details on how to connect to a PC video card.

Yes i am from Europe, Belgium infact.

I can buy that 27" sceen for 50€.
I think i'm going to buy that one, normaly it will fit perfectly in the frame from the old/broken screen.

Exept for the scart-to-pc cable do i need a special videocard?

Depends if you can use something like Soft15khz (thread is also stickied in this forum).  There is a list of supported cards somewhere in there.  An ArcadeVGA is another option if you'd rather not bother with all that.
