Mame is not letting me change the resolution to 640x480.

For some dumb reason, I don't think the latest versions of Mame will let me run in 640x480, even if I change the .ini file. Instead, it runs games at 800x600, and then scales it down to fit my TV's screen. This is a huge pain, since it also means that overscan correction is turned off while the game is running, which caused the top and bottom of the screen to get lopped off.

I also have Mame32 .105 on this computer, and games have no problem at all running at 640x480 on it. I don't recall trouble with Mame .125 either, but it had a whole host of other problems that made it more or less unusable for me. Mame 124 defaulted to 800x600 too, and I couldn't change it there either.

Am I editing the .ini file incorrectly, or have recent versions of Mame just been very buggy when it comes to resolutions? Which version of Mame should I be using to avoid having resolution problems and still have a good amount of game support?

Do you have 'switchres' set to 1 in mame.ini?  If not, you should.
