Maximus Arcade. Any good?
« on: July 11, 2008, 11:50:27 am »
Hi all,

I've just discovered Maximus Arcade  and I want to hear all the good and bad about this one.  I'm using Mala having moved from Mamewah.  I'm happy with Mala but I'd I have some crashing issues I can't iron out.  It isn't very often but I'm always up for alternative eye candy.

Rant away glavens!  :blah:

Maximus is an excellent front end.  Very professionally done and somewhat supported.   I have used it on my cabinet for a while now and never had any real issues with it.   The only issue that I have is that updates seem to take forever to come out, but being a 1 man team that is sortta expected.  Configuration is extremely easy, and navigation is even easier.  My 6 year old son has no problems at all navigating systems, navigating games and even adding favorites to his own favorites list.

I really have no issues with Maximus and I've been happy with it for a while.

I have been using maximus arcade and it's really great and easy to use.  I've tried other frontends where some of the emulators did not work with the software.  Maximus Arcade seems to work with almost everything.  There's a thirty day trial.  Give it a try and see if it's for you.

I like it as well.  The downside is that it's not free, but it probably has the easiest, most straightforward setup I've seen yet in a frontend.  The default skins are great, it's skinnable and comes with a skin editor, and it really well done.

I'd recommend it, especially to people who may be less technically inclined.

I use it and I have absolutely no tech skills whatsoever.  You can have it setup in minutes.  The only problem I have had is I cant get intro movies to work on my setup.  I'm using v.2.08.

Really though besides that one little snafu, its very user friendly and not too hard on the eyes.

I like it a lot, though sometimes I do have a problem with it not exiting mame back to the front end properly.

I had the same problem with the intro movies. Install ffdshow http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761 . Then you can use the EMUMOVIE intro vids. They rock!
And I enjoy Maximus Arcade it works GREAT!  :soapbox:

I have it and love it.  Worth the money for sure if you don't want to spend an eternity working on configuring one of the free (albeit powerful) FEs that are popular.

One tip.  Right now .bat files don't execute properly within the FE if you are passing all kinds of params.  However, assuming your commands are correct you can just make them .cmd files and they will work perfectly.

This FE is awesome. Ive tried more than a few and Maximus is the best. My cab runs 24/7 no crashes. The only time I run into problems is when kids mash too many buttons at the same time and thats usually an easy fix like close mame settings screen.

I had that issue too. I solved it with a great app called 'JoytoKey', you have to set from Maximus any key to exit, and then map it to the exit button on your CPO. Hope this helps.

I'm trying it out right now and so far I really like it, BUT my cabinet needs to run at a lower resolution than 640X480, so when using Maximus I tend to get a flicker, which eventually gives me a headache. I was told that future updates will allow custom resolutions, but as someone else mentioned, it takes forever for updates to come out.

All in all, it's very nicely done.  Try the 30 day trial to see if you like it.

Thanks for the input guys.
I love Mala but it has been crashing hard on me lately and I've been looking for alternatives and MA looks solid.
