Taito Space Invaders Clone.
« on: June 11, 2008, 12:04:16 am »
Man its been a while since I posted a project here  :o

Thought some of you might like this one though.

I built a Taito Big Blue a few days ago.

Some build shots below.

I built as per spec but I always forget how short they are. I built a 50mm plinth to make it taller:

I gave in a sand then primed and painted it with some left over Tiger Gold (GM Colour) that I had left over from painting my Valiant VF Coupe (OZ/NZ version of a Hemi Dart). It was sanded flat with some 800grit to get it super smooth for the decals. The black is a metallic and looks pretty nice.

Now for the Boo Boo :lol. I got distracted when I had the decals laid out and when I came back to this machine I picked up a decal and stuck it down. I used the wet method of course :p simply because I was on my own and car paint is like glass so once its stuck, thats it.

I didn't take much notice until a friend politely pointed out that I had put them on the wrong sides. Idiot! The large crater is supposed to be at the rear, not the front. Oh well. The machine is finished but I don't have anymore pics. I will post some more next week when I am back home.

Still looks cool.

Looks awsome Spacies!  Did the Taito Space Invaders have any black light inserts inside the cabinet?  If so, what are you going to do about those?  As always terrific work.  About the side art, everybody makes errors once in awhile, still looks great.

That is too sweet. It does look factory made. Forget about putting the pics on the wrong side of the cab. I know it's tough to do when your a stickler for perfection as the job on your cab appears to be. Go enjoy a couple of pints of something and have a couple of games. Play a game of the bubble head version for me. :applaud:

Very nice indeed. Is it set up so that you see a mirror image of the monitor like the original?

Ta. :)

The cab has that "brand new from the factory" look. Congrats. Personally I would've never noticed the error myself. I think most people will never notice it unless you tell them.

Turns out I have only put one on backwards as the originals used the same art on both sides. So one side had the crater at the front and the other it is at the back. I was being clever when I tweaked it and made it so the crater was meant to be at the back on both sides. Cheers!

As above. Thanks for the kind words. You know what, building something different is cool and all,but when you build a clone (or close to it) of an original, it really makes you feel like you have done good if you know what I mean. It feels more 'arcade'.

Thanks. Nah, no mirror. The tube is mounted on a sloping panel inside at approx 35 degrees.
 :) Second best thing. LOL
