If mame was stoped...
« on: May 29, 2003, 01:50:35 am »
If all of a sudden mame was stoped. Noone was working on it anymore, and the source code was gone.  Would you be satisfied whith the games currently emulated?

Personally, I would be fine. All of the games I want to play are all ready playable.
On the other hand, there are lots of games new and old that would be lost. Currently however the older ones are the only ones I'm concerned with. I imagine in the furture the now "new" games would then enter that area. But of course someone else would start another project to take over where mame left off, but I dont think it would ever be the same.
Great big gobs of greasy grimey gopher guts.

I'd be fine.  I'm in it for the 80s (and some early 90s) goodness, so I really don't care if I don't get ALL of the latest Japanese Mahjong releases.

I would definitely survive....  As Sasquatch stated and I agree, how many mahjong games could I do without?  All of them....  My main MAME cab is actually still running .59, haven't had any new games that have come out since that I just have to have.

I would be fine with the resulting number of games which I have probably not played any more then 10% but I would miss the activities involved with constantly updating mame and collecting new roms.

My already built machines do not get upadated but I like to keep current so that the next machine that I build will be that much more interesting then the ones that I built a year ago or 6 months ago/

I am happy with what I have.

Because of the near "demise" of the arcade; it is a possibility (not too likely; that MAME will one day be done... (and have EVRY ARCADE GAME EVER!) Okay I'm dreaming ;D

Actually I'm just hoping they lay off emulating games that are brand new (2002, etc).  Cuz stuff like that only attracts the attenion of the lumbering Coin Op Giants....and that will shut mame down, or at least make development for it something only a few will ever hope to do...

I know. I have never bothered to email any of the developers, because, hey they are all working for free. But if they wanted my input at all I would say to hold off on the newer games and the Mahjong games (which are probably realistically only enjoyed by maybe 10 percent of players), and instead concentrate on fixing the games that are already in Mame.

Like, did you ever notice how pretty much EVERY pinball game in Mame is messed up. All of them, even Vs. Pinball seems to have problems. That has to be some kind of amazing coincidence since we are talking 12 different titles on maybe 10 different platforms.

Also, so many games without sound that it isn't even funny (especially the early 90s Namco hardware games).

"Left Ctrl, Right Ctrl".

How about a dip switch option, or maybe just an alternate version to play Turbo and other games with LED scoreboards WITHOUT the virtual scoreboard on the screen (maybe there is a way to do that, but I dunno how).

Also, once again, maybe I am dumb, but is there anyway to just display the first monitor on those multi-monitor Playchoice and VS titles?
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

MameDev already is "laying off" these games, AFAIK.

Mame usually never enables a game less than ~2 years old.  I.E.: 2002 games won't be emulated on the official build until 2004 or later (it's not a hard rule, though).  Also, companies have asked/told mameDev not to include certain games that are older than 2 years old (such as GTG3D, GTG2000, or hanaho's rapid fire), and they aren't enabled.  People can, however, add emulation to their own builds for many of these games because all that needs to be done is copy-n-paste for other drivers  (adding new neogeo games (metal gear 4) are pretty easy, for example).

It's the non-dev newbies that are clamming for the new games, but mameDev knows how to ignore them.

I have never bothered to email any of the developers, because, hey they are all working for free. Oh boy. If you want to get flamed, post this on mame.net or mameworld.net.  I wouldn't blame them; your suggestion is like telling a multi-threaded, multi-processor computer running seti (aka "mahjong"), compiling apps (aka "newer games"), and downloading stuff (aka "fixing old games") to stop everything else but the downloading so the dl goes faster.

Amen to that.  According to the game startup screen, even Galaga isn't emulated 100% yet.  And that's THE arcade game :).

Um, and yeah, what's the problem with that?  Computers should never be running Mahjong (aka crap) in the first place :)  Stop everything, and get the old stuff 100% first.  Those guys are turning into M$...

...I would be sad.  Not because my favorite game wasn't added(because it has been,) but because I wouldn't have the new release to look forward too.  Its kinda like going to pick up the latest issue of your favorite magazine, or watching the next episode of your favorite show.

On the other hand, there are a few games I would like to see added also.

Having said all that, if it stopped, I would make it.  It would be hard to go on, but I think I could make it.

On a positive note, we are selling a couch, so I will have space for a cabinet soon :)

I'd be a bit pissed. There are a few games I really like that don't have sound emulation yet, or aren't emulated at all.

Wonderboy 3: Monster Lair, Vandyke, Bonanza Bros.

It's sad the way the arcade industy is going. Eventually it'll return to the way it was though. Sega and Namco will go bust with all their silly amusement deluxe cabinets and the market will reestablish itself with less ambitious tech.

The problem with the current market is there's no economy of scale. They're investing way more money on research and development so they can't try risky ideas and all you get is racers and light gun games.

Eventually they'll realise that you don't need a $20,000 cabinet to make a game a commercial success.

There are games that work in the home and games that work in the arcade and its nothing to do with graphics.

Sammy's cheap Atomiswave hardware is a step in the right direction. I hope its a success.

Sort of hard to imagine me not working on mame:Analog+ anymore. ;)

Ignoring that, I'd be glad that mame has as much as it already has, but not satisfied.  If you're addicted, you're never satisfied; and I'm addicted.

I would be indifferent, I am just thankful there even is mame.  I would be quite satisfied with what is already there.  You would not believe how many times I just load a random game, and get hooked on it for a long time.

I don't think people realize just how fantastic this is.  I hear people complain about the lack of recent GTG's, but I'd much rather IT ask us not to emulate their recent cash cows rather than sic the SPA on the whole scene...

i'd like to see sound working in a lot of the namco games ect... finish things that were started get them perfect, then move on...newer games are crap compared to whats on mame....so its not like they would be behind, since no new classics, 2d platformers, ect... are really being created for the arcade scene

I, too, like the "please don't include xyxxyx" instead of "we're filing a suit on your butts".

Much more diplomatic, and less of a headache.  It's also one of the reasons mame is still going strong.  (Being "small", and not making money are two other major reasons.)

Sigh...  Art, research, and programming are better executed through inspiration than when directed by committee or votes.

Example: all I know is mame's input handling, so me stopping my "work" (to me it's more like "play" than "work") until someone fixes the namco sound is not productive.

Fixing bugs can be hard, long work.  Tracking them down can be boring and tedious.

Example 2:  OG is working on fixing the enormous system16 problems, but also takes "rests" by working on other stuff.  It has been said that without those rests OG would have stopped fixing system16 all together.

Mame is 100% voluntary work.  Each person determines work they want to work on, for whatever reason they want.  Trying to get them to work on the stuff you want done can be like trying to persuade someone to change their favorite color to your own.  (I know want that's like, and is why I work on inputs.)

If you want your bugs fixed so badly, please write and submit the code yourself.

Two points here, no disrespect to the makers of MAME.

1. For me, personally, it has ended. For a good number of releases now it has rolled out nothing but Majahng games and some other stuff I don't want.

2. My classics list is pretty well met by mame, there are probably ony a few classics not emulated and since classics aren't really being added anymore I am probably as stocked as I am going to get.

I still can't believe I'm actually building my very own arcade machine that will one day let me play Pac Man, Defender, Kiki KaiKai etc etc the way I used to play them. Standing up at an upright arcade machine.
It blows me away to be honest. I know a lot of you have been around MAME for a long time but I only discovered it about 4 months ago!
Think of all the time I've wasted doing other stuff!

" I still can't believe I'm actually building my very own arcade machine that will one day let me play Pac Man, Defender, Kiki KaiKai etc etc the way I used to play them. Standing up at an upright arcade machine.

That was what it was all about for me. I started with a wrecked Asteroids delux cab and now it is a mint looking machine yet it features the mame library!

After a while the one machine started to seem like not enough. Sure I had a rotating monitor so the Galaga was vertical and Golden Axe was Horizontal. But I needed a dedicated verticle machine to be happy. I got a deal on a POW cab and modified it into a Q*Bert with all new paint/art/cpo etc. Now I have those two and am looking at a third. There is something really cool about walking into the room and having your own personal multi cab arcade.

Unless it's sitting in your living room :).

But, I'm pleased to announce that we're moving out of our 900 sq. ft. 2 bdrm condo into a 1200+ sq. ft. 3 bedroom condo with partially finished basement.  Yes, that means no more cab in the living room!!!!  :)  It will get more play now, that's for sure.

Let's hope MAME keeps going so we get that really cool, high speed, match the colour to he note game so I can play a weird, high speed version of fur elise!

I'm pretty short of space at the moment but I'm working on the principal that when the girlfriend sees how big the new cab is, she'll leave me and I'll have all the extra space I need!  ;D
