I dissected a laptop and installed it into a frame. It became a digital photo frame, running Windows XP. It pulls photos wirelessly from a Flickr account that my wife and I control. So when my mother in law comes home from work, she's often surprised to see brand new pictures of her grand daughter displaying on her photo frame. It's a gift that keeps on giving. And the fact that I built it does two things: 1) it gives me loads of cred . . . they love me, and 2) it looks approximately 1000x better than almost anything you could buy.
It cost me about $25 for the frame. The laptop was just an old junker that wasn't in use. I did have to pick up a WiFi card for it, though, which was probably another $20.
