Which new monitor is the best?
« on: April 13, 2008, 11:18:09 pm »
I have a Mortal Kombat 2 cabinet running MAME which currently has a Wells Gardner 7197 25" monitor and I am Using JPAC.

Anyway, I need a new monitor because the resolution on the current one is OK for games, but terrible in windows and my frontend gameex at 800X600 and blurry. It isn't much better at 640X480 either.

I don't think I can fit a 27" monitor since there is a 25" wide opening in the cab, although it would be nice.

Has anyone tried to cram a 27" monitor in a cab designed for a 25" monitor?

If my presumption is correct and I need to stick with a 25" monitor, does anyone have any recommendations for good hi res 25" monitors that I can buy and easily put in my rig?

I appreciate it...

DJ, I am thinking the same thing.  I probably won't get mine for a while, I have to save up some coin...  Do you think you could give me a review once you get yours?

What does it mean when it says the resolution is 640X480 max?  Does that mean 800X600 won't work or will look bad?  I really don't want to run that low of a resolution if I can avoid it.

Is there a huge difference between the SVGA with a native resolution of 1024X768 and this monitor?  Is it a big enough difference to buy a new cab that can accomodate it?

Contact Rick at Nieman Displays and he can give you a price. Don't forget that Nieman has distributors all over the USA so there may be a distributor near your to save on shipping costs.

Is that a digital monitor (ie does it have an on screen display and settings memory)?  Keep in mind that if this is for MAME usage and it is not digital, you will most likely have to make manual pot adjustments whenever you change resolutions significantly.

What does it mean when it says the resolution is 640X480 max?  Does that mean 800X600 won't work or will look bad?  I really don't want to run that low of a resolution if I can avoid it.

If you use a tool like Soft15khz, you can run 800x600 and even 1024x768 on that monitor (interlaced).

got an e-mail from Rick at http://niemandisplays.com/ who referred me to Larry...  Here is the pricing on that monitor.

The 24.8" Trimode is $426 plus about $25.00 shipping at actual cost.  There is no handling charge.  You can't beat the price or quality.  Betson usually has Kortek 19" monitors on sale for about ~$160.  Personally I think they are crap but they work and they are cheap.  I have one Wells Gardner 7300 I could sell you for $250 shipping included.  LMK.  Have a great day.

I'll probably roll with the Makvision. I've heard good things on them. Actually there is a Happ dist. here in Indianapolis on the south side of town. Not to mention the Makvision is $61.00 cheaper. Unless he can come up with a really good reason I'm rolling with the Makvision. I won't be getting it till like the 25th or something.

I try not to dish my competition... I never said In was the cheapest, but what Happ is selling then for is just crazy, Sort of reminds me of a bumper sticker I keep seeing... "Out of a Job yet, keep buying foreign"

Yes I know I am in Canada but at least it is North America..  we actuslyy build the monitor and when you call for service you get me...

Hope that is worth a little more than $60.

If not good luck and I am still here to help.

Sorry,
I didn't mean to offend. It just that I have shelled out About $700.00 this month for toys. I am about tapped out. I'm sure your monitor are excellent especially if Ken Layton suggested them and when I went to your webpage I was impressed but at the same time turned off because of the lack of pricing and purchase info. I'm pretty sure I will be doing business with you in the future especially since you guys have a wide selection of LCD's.

Hey there Rick!
Since we have you on the topic, what would be the price on the 27" Tri-mode Flat to 98108? I'd love to snatch one of these from you considering your awesome rep. If I see Ken endorse someone, they have to be awesome.

Feel free to pm or post here:-)

Rick or anyone with experience with the Nieman Tri Mode, do you have demensions for that monitor as far as depth front to back.  Also, on the front mounting hole to mounting hole?  I did not see them on your site.  Thank you.

Guys.  Rick doesn't post prices cause unless you live in Canada, you are better off purchasing from one of his distributors.  Shipping a single monitor from Canada is a price killer.  The distributors set their own pricing.

DJ, no offence taken by any means, everyone on the forum has been pretty cool. When we talked on the phone I forgot to tell you try calling Shaffer in Indi 317-899-2530 - they carry my 24.8"- let me know that works out.

Rick, what would be involved in producing a digital version of your tri-sync monitor that saves and recalls geometry settings via an OSD?  I realize this isn't exactly a critical feature in the real world where arcade monitors are deployed in the same game for years, but I think you would really do well selling them around here assuming the price is close to your 24.8 Trisync.  Given your reputation for quality, it would be really nice when someone here asks "what is the best arcade monitor for a MAME Cabinet" to be able to just provide a link to your site.

No sorry but I do not carry 19" thanks to the rediculous price offered by the offshore stuff. It costs me $126 to build one and I am told they sell for as low as $140.

Thanks fo the interest though.

Hey DJ, glad to save you a few bucks, besides when I help the distributors sell, then he orders more. Any of you guys, when you want my monitor and I have sent you to a distributor, do me a favor, tell him I sent you.

If you don't have anyone close I will do my best on pricing, but again I would appreciate it if you went to your local distributor and pushed them to contact me after all like DJ sometimes it will save you some bucks.

Sorry misssed the thread posted above.... digital tri-mode is what we have been trying to do, the problem is that we need a software guy that program the on screen display. I am not a programmer but if we don't find one soon I guess I may need to take that up??

Rick,
I checked on your website and could not find a list of distributors.
Where can I get one in NY (Long Island area or NYC)?
Thanks,
Alex

Rick is an isolation transformer requireed for your monitors or can they be plugged right into a power outlet?

I believe all the Nieman monitors do not need an isolation transformer and can be plugged right in.

I looked on your page to find the closest distributor in Eastern PA/Southern NJ, but didn't see a regional/state list.
Are they on the page and I've just missed them?
