Good Wii Games?
« on: April 11, 2008, 01:59:21 pm »
Got a Wii in a trade.  Want to buy a few good Wii games.  Not interested in standard joystick type games...I can get those for the PC... I am looking for games that utilize the Wii's unique control abilities...

Any suggestions?

Trauma Center
Okami
Zack and Wiki
Trauma Center
Winning Eleven Soccer (Check out the review . . . this sounds revolutionary for a sports game)
Resident Evil 4 (If you haven't played it on another system, this is the best version of one of the best games ever made)
Metroid Prime 3
Trama Center
Elebits
Warioware (This game provides about 2-3 hours of hilarious great fun, then it's over -- RENTAL ONLY)

SUPER MARIO GALAXY!

It starts a bit easy, but it is a very fun game.
Nothing witty here...move along.

if you like shooting monsters, germans, aliens:
Resident Evil 4
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Metroid Prime 3

The only reasonable racing game (not realistic, but a lot of fun)
Excite truck
(haven't yet tried Mario Kart though, since it wasn't out in europe yet)

for the missus:
WarioWare Smoothmoves
Kororinpa

Forgot if you have kids, but if you do (or nephews):
Barnyard
Chicken little
Cars

Don't listen to shmokes about Trauma center. It's like a badly written soap series   :P

Just get a wiikey so you don't feel so burned on the games.  Much easier to piss away a nickel than fiddy bucks.

Do you need special software to create "backups" of Wii Discs or will any old DVD burning software do?

If you get an ISO file you can use any DVD burner. If you get a .wii file (or rip a Wii DVD yourself) you first need to decode it. Thats'pretty rare though.

The more I play the Wii, the more disappointed I am in it.  I feel the same way about Xbox 360 and PS3, though.... same old crap with shinier graphics.
So true. I think I'd appreciate the PS3 or Xbox 360 better since I love racing games and the Wii really blows chunks at racing games.

I bought 10 games and didn't like any of them. Got completely fed up with the Wii. Half a year later got a Wiikey. Since then I tried at least 70 games. Of all those I really enjoyed only Resident evil 4, Medal of Honor 2 and Excite truck (which I still play now and then) and gotten through Metroid half way till I got bored of it.

The Wii is nice for kids and women though.

Also, if you like Mario 64 or platformers in general, then you should definately get Super Mario Galaxy.  It doesn't make great use of the Wiimote, but its one of the best platform games there is.

Warioware (This game provides about 2-3 hours of hilarious great fun, then it's over -- RENTAL ONLY)

Of course, if you have friends over, the "last man standing" type multi player events in Warioware are always quite fun.  It's always the most popular game at our gatherings.

I could care less about traditionally controlled games... the Wiimote sucks as a gamepad... actually,  ALL GAME PADS SUCK.... I hate em with a passion.   I am interested only in games that use the unique controllers that the Wii offers.

That's what I had in mind when I made my list.  There's a reason that there's no Mario Galaxy or Zelda: Twilight Princess on my list.

Okami and Resident Evil use mostly traditional control, but both of them make significant and novel use of the Wii Remote (paintbrush in Okami, shooting in RE).  I actually haven't played either of them (I owned RE for Gamecube) but I'm confident that Okami is excellent and brilliant and beautiful game.  RE 4, of course, is the same game it was on Gamecube, just with better controls.  On Gamecube it was one of the best games ever made.  Thus . . .

Anyway, you can be pretty confident that any of the games on my list are good games that make novel use of the controller.

That's what I had in mind when I made my list.  There's a reason that there's no Mario Galaxy or Zelda: Twilight Princess on my list.
And is also the reason why I put the disclaimer on Mario Galaxy.

No More Heroes is a lot of fun and while it basically controls traditionally, the wiimote controls for the finishing moves, grappling moves, etc. have you constantly swinging the remote and actually makes the game a lot more fun.  Its not the greatest game in the world, but its a lot of fun and extremely unique.

Zero Punctuation just did a pretty funny review of the game (just remember he hates pretty much every game and always points out every flaw he can find, and this is definately NSFW)
http://www.videosift.com/video/Zero-Punctuation-No-More-Heroes

For games that make heavy use of the Wiimote I would say Metroid Prime 3 and RE4 if you like shooters.  And while I've never played them, Zack and Wiki and Trama Center are supposed to be really good, and they both heavily utilize the wiimote.

The list I gave is also based on the Wiimotes special nature. Shooters use the IR sensor and Kororinpa (guide a ball through a maze) and WarioWare Smoothmoves make extensive use of the motion/tilt sensors.

The Wii offers the most enjoyable golf video game experience I have had and I would like to suggest Pangya "Super Swing Golf: Season 2"  It is a bit more interesting and more entertaining than the Wii Sports golf.  Saying this might disqualify my suggestion: it is the only game I've purchased for the Wii -it was only $20 used. The only game I might consider paying more than $30 for so far is Okami.  This game's brush moves should be a lot more fun to do with a Wiimote or a touchscreen than with an analog stick.

I'm looking forward to We Love Golf which will hopefully be a really good golf game that uses the wiimote as a golf club (similar to Wii Sports) and has online gaming.

Yeah, that We Love Golf game, aside from the ---smurfing--- embarrassing title, looks like it's going to be really good, and it comes from a developer that definitely knows how to make a good golf game (Mario Golf).  I really don't thin Super Swing quite nailed it.

By the way, it sounds like the developer botched the paintbrush mechanic in Okami.  It's still getting phenomenal reviews, mainly cos the game is apparently just phenomenal.  But all the reviewers seem to be saying that the controls aren't what they should be.  Here's a post where I quote from the three reviewers from the most recent issue of EGM.

On the other hand, IGN seems to like the brush mechanics just fine.  Here's a video review:

Yes: you become a Demigod and gain super powers; meanwhile you feel really fuzzy, and everyone sees you running around on all fours and howling.

Well as an Anti Wii person who still plays it, here are the games i would recomend

Zelda- uses wiimote pretty well, is a bit simple, but overall i keep playing it (havent won it yet)
Battalion Wars 2- Use the Wiimote but doesnt really need it, Its a bit like being in a RTS game, one of the top 5 games (IMHO).
No More Hero's- ok, gets a bit old, but not to bad, wimote use required
Ghost Squad- rail shooter, way to short, but fun (must like gun games) wiimote works great
Metroid Prime- good use of Wiimote, but uses it in places where its just lame (good outwieghs bad)
Elebits- very wierd game, basicly tear apart a house looking for little guys who make electcity, you turn on stuff(tv-pc-lamps) and more pop out so you can turn on more stuff, use wiimote to shoot um(collect um) also used to grab stuff and move it and open stuff, very wierd, but i like it.
Pinball hall of fame- not to bad, kinda cool to bump tables with wiimote
Zak and Wiki- puzzle game for kids, but some of the puzzles are a bit tough, uses wiimote alot
Dragon Quest- this one got bad reviews but I like it alot, uses wiimote to fight, action RPG

Fire Emblem- no use of remote, but good tactical RPG

Just my opinion

I still don't like Mario Kart. My kid and GF do though. The silly bombs annoy the hell out of me. Personally I'm dying to get my hands on "Race Driver GRID"

Just got an SMS that tomorrow I will get my Wii Fit  8)

Woohoo, got my Wii Fit this morning. It's actually a pretty cool toy. Quite heavy too.

It starts off a bit ridiculous where after the body test (weight, height age and if you can stand up straight are tested) it calculates your "fitness age". The only fitness it measured is your balance, with some crappy test that doesn't work that well.

The exercises with the trainers are nice and actually harder than I imagined.

The balance games are absolutely horrendous. For instance there is a ski game and it basically means you hang left or right to steer in that direction. Nothing like skiing (eg see the Wii fit thread), but I guess in this case that doesn't matter much. The problem is that when you move from left to right you shortly put more pressure on the opposite foot (since you need to accelerate your upper body in the other direction). So the skier actually moves in the opposite direction if you move fast. Same with all the balance games. It's not that hard to work around it (lift a foot instead of actually swaying your body). Guess that one is more for the kids though.

BTW I also received a Nyko perfect shot. I had high hopes for that, but I doubt I will ever use it. It's completely impractical for the games I like. Seems like it will only really work for "light gun games" on rails (like Ghost squad, resident evil umbrella chronicles and House of the dead)

For games that use the nunchuck you need 3 hands to play with this "gun". One hand for the nunchuck, one for the gun and one for buttons on top of the Wiimote.

I heard the three hand adapter will be released later this year.

Seriously though it sounds like there are very few wii games i would want to play.  When you add in gamecube games the number goes up a little but then i could just get a gamecube.
Back in MY day we lived on the moon and we had to build a rocket ship from scratch to get to the Earth before we suffocated.

Heh.  You should send it to me.  I really want one of those, specifically for on-rails shooters.  But I can't justify buying one, in spite of them being so inexpensive, cos I'm poor and its a toy and I almost never play videogames these days.

Well either you want one for playing the games and I send it to you or you don't play games and I won't send it to you :P

I tried it this afternoon on Ghost Squad and I have to say that game it's a lot better with the gun. I would guess that the games that are designed to work with the zapper should work with the Nyko gun. You need to press the buttons on top now and then but not that often (changing the gun settings and fist fights)

Yeah . . . from reviews I've read, it's much better than the zapper for on-rails games like Ghost Squad.  The trigger is apparently sloppy on the zapper, and the whole shooting a rifle from the hip thing isn't the most preferable position to play those games from.  But even if you didn't want it, it probably makes no sense to take off your hands.  Shipping costs from Holland would probably be at least half of what the thing costs brand new.

What I meant is that it works for Zapper games since I would assume that the Zapper has the same problem that you cannot really use the buttons on top of the Wiimote. So games made for use of the Zapper will also use need to use only the B, C and Z buttons for the more important actions.

Zapper games will also use the B for selecting options. Usually A is confirm and B is back. Maybe I'm nitpicking here, but that's seriously annoying when you are using a gun grip (either Perfect shot or Zapper). I kept going back through the menus (by pressing B)

Just saw that Medal of Honor 2 is supposed to be a Zapper game. Better try that again, because initially I couldn't play that game at all with the Perfect Shot. The default setup requires you to press A (hold gun up) and the cursor keys (crouch, change weapon) a lot. That just doesn't work with the Zapper/Perfect Shot. Guess there is an alternate Zapper setup.

One problem with the Perfect Shot itself is that the grip is just a tad too big and a tad too square. It's not very pleasant to hold for long.

What's also glaringly apparent when you use a gun grip is how bad the aim is with the Wii. Looking through the sight of the gun grip, the Wii aiming reticule is off by a mile (obviously this would depend on the setting, but in my case the aim was way off). I guess Nintendo wanted keep things simple and didn't include a calibration screen. Ghost Squad does have a calibration screen and it's a whole lot more fun if you can play without a cursor on screen. All it takes is shooting at two corners and it's calibrated pretty accurately. Nintendo really should add (have added) this in the Wii settings.

BTW if you want to go cheap, you can always DIY:
