Quick MAME question here....
« on: April 01, 2008, 09:20:49 am »
Gents,

I've got an extra 700MHz P3 board with 700-something MB of RAM, 30GB HD.
Im thinking of doing just a classic MAME cab- which version of MAME would you suggest?

I tried running the MAME101 (the one with the frontend)  but it lags the sound!  Even on ollld stuff
like Karnov & Robotron?  Any suggestions?  Just want it to run about 50-60 classics, not a powerhouse or anything.

Whats the best version for this?  Also, want to omit the mouse, but with this small amount of balls, FE's like
Atomic probably wont cut the mustard.  I assume, Im not sure.  Any feedback is APPRECIATED, cheers guys!

Try spystyles boot cd(or fraggal's - if you can find it).  It's a fairly easy way to do a classics MAME cabinet  I'd start working my way back through the 7 included versions until the sound no longer lags, or start with 0.36.  and work my way up from there.

Definately use an older version of MAME...  maybe in the .7 range?  I have a version at home that runs on older PC's, I'll have to look at it to figure out which it is.

You could use Game Launcher as a FE.  I've used it on a slower PC than yours with good results.

Atomic can perfectly fit your machine. You Just have to choose a appropriate layout.  (for instance in the layout folder there is a layout for slow machine, it should fit)

I use it perfectly  on a Celeron 500Mhz with 256Mega of Ram.

I can help you to do your set up.  If you take a very old version of mame there is special settings to do.

Try using FastMame 84. If you still have problems, which you should try using Fastmame071b. AtomicFE should run fine on that setup. I think you just pass Mala's system requirements. Mamewah should run on anything i'm using it on a 400mhz celeron with 256mb and it runs flawlessy, even using video previews.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

^This. I'm using a 733 Mhz and FastMAME84 (plus MameWAH) has been great.
